Unhealthy?[edit]

"Once unhealthy because of the many marshes ..."

Please explain/clarify, as I cannot fathom why having a marsh would make a place "unhealthy." -- 21:45, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Marshes in Italy were considered unhealthy because of malaria. See Dante, Purgatorio V, "Siena mi fé, disfecemi Maremma". Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:28, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite?[edit]

This article seems to need a radical rewrite, taking out the tourist agency blether and perhaps including a few facts? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:28, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The reclamation/land development of Maremma[edit]

The reclamation/land development of Maremma (in Italian "bonifiche della Maremma", in particular the Tuscan one, was not made under Fascism, but it is known that it was already made during the Grand Duchy of Tuscany from 1700. I'll get some sources. --Chiorbone da Frittole (talk) 10:01, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I didn't see your post here before I made my edit removing the sentence. I'll restore it with some wording changes. Before I undid your edit, I looked at Battle for Land (not wp's finest article) and learned that there was apparently some draining of marshland under Mussolini, so I assumed for the moment that Maremma's marshes were drained then.
