My grandmothers family lived in Margate. We use to go and see them when i was a child. We took a ferry. They owned a Cafe along the seafront. It is a seaside resort a very beautiful place. Their last name was Stander.

REPLY TO PGR94 ANON

In removing the link to my website Bignews Margate, you are removing any significant resource referring to Margates regeneration. Since the Margate article, has little reference to the significant and pivotal changes now being considered for Margate a link to my site which has extensive coverage concerning regeneration as well as other important local matters is a worthwhile contribution.

While I tried to reinstate the Link today I used this link http://bignewsmargate.blogspot.com/search/label/Regeneration

Since the article contains links to turneroundmargate.com (effectively a blog) apparently written by one person (personal), Palm Bay primary-school, Margate jazz festival surely these also should be removed, since their coverage of Margate issues are quite superficial.

I have extensively covered, events and issues in Margate, have had many thousands of hits, report facts, and allow comments unless they are libellous.

As to authority, my name is attached to the blog, I am not some anonymous, contributor and therefore I suggest the anonymous Pgr94 takes the trouble to read before condemning my contribution.

Maybe Pgr94 would like to e-mail me, my address is tonyflaig(insert the at sign)lycos. Co. UK stating their authority.

I didn't write Wikipedia's policies with regard to this issue so please don't take it personally. I would guess that the "no personal blogs" policy is to avoid having large numbers of links to blogs each expressing a personal view, which is not really the aim of an encyclopaedia. If you feel strongly that the policy could be improved then you could take it up with Wikipedia - I'm not sure exactly how you'd go about doing that, you could ask at the Wikipedia Helpdesk for advice.
The link to the Thanet Blog List [1], an independent list of blogs the area, strikes me as a better, more neutral approach. If you still think that your blog should be included we can ask an administrator for advice. Pgr94 06:48, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do ask the administrator about my contribution, I would suggest that if my website is unacceptable, then so are most of the others external links, and if you want to be even handed I suggest removal of these also. I think you should also weigh up reference to "normally" for instance normally I would not work two shifts in one day but in exceptional circumstances I will.

There are several standards, guidelines, rules and etiquette surrounding what should and should not be included in Wikipedia.
Shortcuts
WP:NOT, for example, says that wikipedia should not be used for blogs. It is also considered bad form to add external links to web sites that you have had a hand in developing or providing content for, so on these two grounds alone, I would suggest this link should be removed. As to the point about a recognized authority, I take this to mean someone who is acknowledged OUTSIDE of Wikipedaia as an expert in the particular field. I don't believe merely having lived in the area is sufficient. I would recommend you see the guidelines offered at Wikipedia:Tutorial and some of the linked pages, to get a feel for what is acceptable, possible and desirable. The blog appears to be pressing a specific point of view, it acknowledges itself as a political commentary. On that basis it is not a usable link. If the gentleman feels that Margates regeneration is an important fact then he is welcome to edit the Wikipedia article, remembering NPOV. The gentleman is correct in saying that the other links are superficial, so I would recommend reviewing them in the light of the policies quoted above. Putney Bridge 18:45, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you ought to look at the Thanet life link which appears to be a link to a search engine, why not remove this? Also most views are political and since my blog probably adds to contemporary knowledge of Margate, I still think it makes my contribution valid but I will concede that to the non creative academic mind, I can only assume the power trip of deleting original work rather than allowing it must give great pleasure so delete away! Just cloak yourself in your ritualistic indulgence as you enforce your own imagination or lack of it. Tony Flaig still what authority some anon contributor has is beyond me.

List of Links[edit]

Tony Flaig in the above section does have a valid point. He does seem to have been victimised, as most of the links are of dubious content. The Turneround Margate link should be removed according to the criteria above.

Some links could be moved into the appropriate place in main article, such as the Dreamland link. The Thanet life link contains a typing error. Even if it was correct the domain no longer exists, it gets redirected to a search engine. The Jazz one is an out of date advert.

I would suggest the links should be severely pruned to just the Thanet Tourist Info and the Margate Civic society. MortimerCat 08:27, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scenic Railway[edit]

Population[edit]

In the Demography section it says the 2001 census records 40,386 as the population of Margate. In the table next to it the figure (from the same census) is 57,008. Anyone know the correct population?--Septemberfourth476 (talk) 10:29, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Twinned with Yalta - reference?[edit]

I have tried and failed to find any reference to Yalta on the Thanet Council website, or the Margate Civic Society site. Is there any live reference on the internet as a source for this? Perhaps it was once true, but now the link has gone? 91.125.200.37 (talk) 20:18, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Scandinavian pirates?[edit]

I suspect the reference to pirates in the Government section appears to be someone's idea of a joke and I was tempted to remove it; however, on the off chance that the town really was taken over by pirates in 1957 I've marked the first sentence as needing a citation. The subsequent sentence that there appears to be nothing of value in the town sounds to me like a value judgement that violates the spirit of writing from a neutral point of view. Climate - Rainfall Data Accuracy[edit]

The rainfall quoted seems very low. Using the reference url (Bing) I find the annual rainfall based on monthly values rounded to the nearest cm is 57cm compared with the 42cm quoted. Regeneration Section - Promotional terms[edit]

Hi, I have just edited the above section which contained a number of WP:PEACOCK words and promotional sentences. The paragraph was added by 86.173.38.160, a single use editor, on 20 June 2012, (see Margate: Revision history). It is still unreferenced and (probably) needs editing by an editor familar with the subject. (i happened upon the Margate article after seeing it on an old episode of Homes Under the Hammer) thanks. Twinning references[edit]

The twinning section has no references at all, and tbh I find some of them hard to believe. Astana is a major capital city: why would it be twinned with a mid-sized seaside resort?
