Untitled[edit]

I'm not sure that the second paragraph, on abandoning the game between Internazionale and Milan, is necessary ... if it *should* be there, it should also probably be fleshed out a bit.

Also, there's precious little information on Dr Merk at the moment. I may fix it up myself later if I get time (and remember to do so).--MarkGallagher 00:23, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

World Cup 2006[edit]

Didn't Merk ref the opening game in this year's World Cup? Maybe that should be mentioned if he did...--69.197.223.64 16:12, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He couldn't be doing that, as the 2006 World Cup takes place in Germany, with Germany being one of the two teams to play in the opening game. Merk, being German, couldn't be the referee on that game. In fact, the referee was Horacio Elizondo. Cheers, Something Wicked 23:51, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently in reaction to Merk's penalty kick call in the USA-Ghana match, user Remonj added the descriptor "Jackass!" to this page twice. As a USA supporter myself, I'm pretty steamed at Merk, too--but there's no excuse for taking out one's frustrations by vandalizing Wikipedia. Rinne na dTrosc 23:44, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The penalty call may have given Ghana the win, but it was not relevant to their qualification for the second round, as they would still have gone through had the game ended in a draw. Perhaps that paragraph could be worded more clearly.

Markus Merk is a FIFA puppet that made sure an African team went through to the round of 16. This is important because the next world cup will be in Africa. Following orders from his handlers he could not take a chance leaving the game to be tied because USA could have scored a goal in the final minutes and leave Ghana out of the party. Merk was ridiculed as a child and young man and wants to prove that he is a "da man". I feel sorry for him.

Markus Merk has a great resume. Kudos. The fact is, there is absolutely no excuse for calling a penalty when the ball is thirty feet in the air and two players are battling for position in the box. Completely inexcusable for a ref with "supposedly" great ability to ref. What could have possessed him to make that call? I wonder. Being tied 1-1 is much different than knowing you HAVE to score two in a half to win. It changes everything. On a final note, I applaud all you do for humanity Merk, but now perhaps you should direct your humanitarian efforts to the homeless people in the US or something to at least alleviate the wound you have left on all US fans by killing a very possible opportunity to advance to the next round. I am already hoping you will not ref OUR games for the next cup. Oh, one more thing...look into moving to Ghana. I guarantee, you might find yourself a celebrity there.

US Officer

By the way, Good luck to Ghana, and ping pong for that oscar award winning dive. They will need it. Either way, I understand it ISN'T Ghana's fault. So I don't have any resentment towards them.

Citations of Socceroos Paragraph[edit]

"potentially hindering Australia's passage into the second round of the tournament" http://abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200606/s1665812.htm (halfway down, Guus Hiddink criticism quoted)

Still tracing down the Glasgow source. If the author who added that paragraph can acknowledge that these sources are those which demonstrate and reinterate the point made in that sentence, feel free to add them as citations.

Jerk[edit]

He's blown too many calls to be keptalive now who wants to kill him!!!!!!!!

Please avoid that kind of barbaric and ludicrous statement to yourself. Being an Australian, I totally agree with the rationale behind your proposition, but posting stuff like that is just ridiculous. --Killfest2 08:37, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

this is son of a bitch, surely if I seen this guy on the street I 'll beat him till he starts pissing blood !!!! He better don't go to Portugal on holyday !!! not even a Portuguese speaking country or it will his funeral !! jerk. If teams like greece and serbia payed him against Portugal than I will be the same amount for beating him up !!! Zweinehund !!! $100 000 award for beating this mutherfucker !! and I'm not joking ! because of those stupid referees that football is not a matter of 22 athletes playing a ball and trying to score a goal but instead it is a fucking referee that desides the scoreboard !!! The most stupid thing is that he can act without any reaction from the FIFA or the UEFA. a referee is god in the stadium !!! this need to be considered. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.92.176.5 (talk) 17:46, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

youngest referee at 25[edit]

Where does that information come from? He was born in March 1962 and refereed his first game in August 1988, so he must have been 26, not 25. Maybe that sentence is trying to tell us that he was appointed even before his birthday which is why the person wrote "at the age of 25". Please let me know, I'm confused;-) And please make it clear in the article. cu, --77.179.82.4 20:55, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
