Bias over Swift raid, racial conflicts, etc.[edit]

I removed the entire paragraph covering the crackdown on illegal workers at the Swift plant. It was heavily biased, and while it is understandable that the raid did negatively affect many people in the community, the article needs to remain unbiased and professional. Even though the paragraph was constructed to appear factual and relevent, if it gets reinserted again it needs to be free of opinion. This isn't an editorial; the moral and political issues are completely up to the reader, we just give them the facts.Wingman1331 01:13, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I restored the deleted section. Better to edit the section for accuracy, and add information, than to delete wholesale an entire section of sourced factual material. (Incidentally, as far as I can tell, there is no material in the section reguarding any racial conflict within the Marshalltown community. The conflicts referred to in the article per se seem to be between some Marshalltown residents and federal agencies involved in the raid.) --Ramsey2006 00:23, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it's more how the section is phrased; to me it sounds like something out of a newspaper rather than encyclopedia. In particular, the line that stands out is the "the baby refuses to eat" sentence. I wouldn't have said anything about the rest of the section if it hadn't been for that line, because as soon as I read that I immediately assumed that the author was attempting to make an emotional appeal, and then I couldn't help but read the rest of the section with an eye for bias. I understand that it is all sourced material, but it just seems to not fit in with the article, and in turn with all the the other Project Iowa articles on cities. However, I have no problem with it staying; I'll take a look at the sources and try to find a more encyclopedic way of phrasing it, and possibly try to balance it out by adding a line or two about why the government decided to crack down on illegal workers so we can get both sides of the issue covered. The subsequent paragraphs (after the initial, reasonably factual opening paragraph) go beyond the stated purpose of the subsection to describe "Marshalltown in the news." They basically channel a series of one-sided human interest stories, all of which flow from the raid on Dec. 12.Ottoump 17:46, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored the reliably sourced factual material on the raid and its aftermath of the raid. I also changed the title of the section from the overly general "Marshaltown in the news". This is not really a general news section.--Ramsey2006 (talk) 12:48, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Odd Omissions

The site history suggests this whole section on immigration raids was removed by an anonymous user in 2011 declaring it 'not relevant', despite all this discussion and apparently without much fanfare at the time. That clearly needs to be rectified. More notable, however, is the now COMPLETE lack of attention to immigration in this article, which is strange as Marshalltown's racial/ethnic diversity is a very unique feature of the town, especially compared to other Iowa towns. I'm gonna take a crack at adding info on immigration in the coming days. Information on the raids has been re-added under the Immigration heading, as well as just more general demographic information to the rest of the article. There may very well be a lot more to say about immigration in Marshalltown (including before the 1990s). The page for Cleveland seems to offer a useful template on how to continue updating the immigration section, and adding other relevant information.TheBananaKingForgot (talk) 23:00, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Language of the Swift raid[edit]

They were deported because they were illegal immigrants, not because they were latin. I feel it would be more accurate if the sentence read; "In 1996, the Swift meatpacking plant was raided by the INS and 148 illegal immigrants were arrested and deported." - Schrandit (talk) 08:06, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The source for that sentence reads as follows:

In 1996, the Swift plant was raided by the INS; as a result, 148 Latinos were arrested and deported.

According to the source, those arrested and deported were Latinos. If you believe that this is inaccurate, then you should find a reliable source stating that they were not Latinos. It is not enough for a wikipedia editor to "feel" that the sentence is inaccurate.--Ramsey2006 (talk) 12:21, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If a murderer is arrested the news doesn't say the police took a white man to jail today they say they arrested a murderer. Whether or not they were mexicans is irrelevant, their crime was illegal immigration. The source says what it says. If any of the 148 Latinos in question were charged and convicted of any crimes (and so far, all that we have to go on here is the original research of your claims), then that information can be added, along with citations to the appropriate reliable sources documenting the convictions. Better not to accuse people of having committing crimes unless we have reliable sources specifying what exactly what crimes they were convicted of. --Ramsey2006 (talk) 18:09, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reasons are as follows:

  • Headings should not normally contain links, especially where only part of a heading is linked MOS:HEAD.
  • Wikipedia articles may include links to web pages outside Wikipedia (external links), but they should not normally be used in the body of an article WP:EL.
  • Prose is preferred in articles as prose allows the presentation of detail and clarification of context, in a way that a simple list may not. Prose flows, like one person speaking to another, and is best suited to articles WP:EMBED.

Do we add someone whose bio says he worked in Marshalltown for a significant amount of time?[edit]

Wikipedia:WikiProject_Cities/US_Guideline#Notable_people says, "Provide information, preferably in prose form, of any famous or notable individuals that were born, or lived for a significant amount of time, in the city" (Emphasis added.)

Judge Fagg's bio says that he practiced law in Marshalltown from 1958 to 1972 (fourteen years). However, as User:Magnolia677 pointed out, Judge Fagg's bio only says that he worked in Marshalltown. The bio doesn't say, specifically, that he lived in Marshalltown. I can't find a source that says whether he actually lived there or not.

Is the fact that Judge Fagg practiced law in Marshalltown for 14 years, sufficient to include him in the list of Marshalltown's "Notable people"? Is there anything in WP"s guidelines that directly addresses whether a person who worked in a town for many years qualifies him to be listed in "Notable people?"
