Page move[edit]

Per previous discussion, I've taken the liberty of moving Mary C. Cain to Mary Cain (athlete) and Mary Cain to Mary Cain (politician) as a compromise. Until Cain the athlete gains more nobility (which I think she has) than Cain the politician, the pages will remain as such. Now Mary Cain is still be redirected to the politician, and I think I need administrator help to make that a 2dab. Per this edit and similar forces, all we will end up with is the disambiguation page, nothing easy to find for the myriad of people looking for this name. I still advocate a full change to the currently much more significantMary Cain. This is not pushing recentism as much as, (as I said before) the other Mary Cain is just not that important and has been overshadowed by the new upcoming phenomenon. There is no articulate standard for when that occurs. I think it is clear from a historical perspective, the athlete's accomplishments already have overtaken name priority vs an obscure segregationist publisher who attempted being a politician. This goes beyond the fact that one is just 17 years old, while the other has been dead for almost 3 decades. Trackinfo (talk) 22:16, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article too long?[edit]

One concern I have with this article is the emphasis on Cain's personal bests. That is, going into way too much detail about her high school records. For example, "On February 2, 2013 at the Boston Indoor Games, Cain set the high school record in the indoor 2 mile at 9:38.68 ... It is also pending as the much more strictly regulated U.S. Junior record." Let's be real, as she is only 17, she is going to continually drop time. Before she even gets to college, we can have an article similar in length to perhaps Galen Rupp or Tariku Bekele. I think this article needs to be significantly cut in length. We can have a section on her phenomenal high school career, but it shouldn't be the bulk of the article. The majority of the article should be international meets or world/Olympic trials, not every time she runs a personal best. She doesn't have much international experience yet, but anyone who has been following her knows she has a future ahead of her.

With the potential of a move, I wanted to articulate just how significant each of these accomplishments are. There are a few details that got excessive or repetitive. Feel free to edit those if I don't get to that. As for the IP's suggestion of a dry simple article, no I disagree with that. We have far too many T&F articles with that kind of pared down information that leaves the story of significant performers in this sport as a pale representation. We call those "stubs." Those incomplete articles are to be frowned upon. Information is requested, but until someone digs out that information and edits it into the article, wikipedia doesn't serve to inform the public. At this moment in history, we can articulate the historical significance of Mary's achievements (breaking records that are decades old). If or when she has greater achievements, this will then pale in comparison and this content will get pared down to just the facts. But we don't write articles planning on their expansion later, we post what we can; what we know, when we know it. This is her story up to now. I agree with trackinfo on this. The article is definitely not too long. I think we need to refrain from comparing articles. It is just as natural to conclude that Rupp's 'early years' section is too short. However, Rupp in his pre college years, didn't do nearly as much as Cain has done already. The details in the two articles are actually quite comparable. Mary Cain has been a major news headliner for the past couple of years and all of the stories are relevant, even if some of the wording needs to fixed so it is less repetitive. 10 seasons in high school?[edit]

"Cain ran for 10 seasons for Bronxville High School," – that seems unlikely, as a student is typically in high school for four years. Perhaps what was meant was "the Bronxville School", where she could have started running in 3rd grade and continued until 12th grade? Chris the speller yack 23:59, 12 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chris the speller, in the U.S. high school system there are 3 seasons of running for distance athletes per year: cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track in the spring. so a typical athlete that does every season for 4 years would have 12 seasons. however in NY, standout athletes in middle school are allowed compete for their high school team starting in 7th grade. it looks like Cain competed for Bronville for spring of 7th grade and winter+spring of 8th grade, then she ran every season (3 per year) until she turned pro after cross country season of her junior year, so that's 1+2+3+3+1=10 in total. it would be nice to have a {{AchievementTable}} of her HS record in the article to clarify things though. --Habst (talk) 02:36, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
