Other Mary Janes in literature

In Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, there is a major character named Jane Mary, who is described as a hideous redhead and was probably not Stan Lee's inspiration for the comic book character.

Mary Jane is the title character of Mary Jane and Mary Jane 2, both novels by Judith O'Brien.

these had nothing to do with mary jane watson.

Ultimate "Mary"

Call me stupid, but I kind of want to point out how in the early issues of Ultimate Spider-Man, there seemed to be a tendency for Mary Jane to be called "Mary", rather than "MJ"... pointless trivia really... but... gah, whatever. (195.92.168.170 02:21, 2 April 2006 (UTC))

Basketball Vandalism

Removed the many inserted references to MJ's "Mad Skillz" in the arts of Basketball... I'll start reporting if it happens again, but it did make me laugh. Check the page history. (195.92.168.174 11:46, 5 April 2006 (UTC))

Skills and equipment

I think there should be a short section on MJ's defensive skills and equipment. Eg, she's trained in self defence, was recently training with Captain America, has fended off normal attackers and the Chameleon, owns a gun, has a amplified spider-tracer, and has Peter's old web-shooters (modified into bracelets). (But as far as I know she's not particularly good at basketball. Anyway...) Thoughts? - HKMARKS 04:21, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Biography

I just did a big rewrite of the Biography section to remove NPOV statements, and provide more biographical information. I might add some of those statements back to the "Controversy" section later if they prove to be relevant and sourced when I look at them more carefully. Dispute or no?

I came here because I noticed the dispute tag on the community page. I'd say the tone of the section needs some serious rewrites. Saying that the editors were out to get the character and such is a little bit much - stick to saying what happened in the stories, and not theorizing on the reasons unless references can be made to interviews. Character boxes

I removed the character box for Ultimate Mary Jane. The reason being that if the Ultimate versions get them, why not every other version? And then it just gets cluttered. For the most part there isn't that huge a difference-- the only difference between 616 and Ultimate MJ that fits in the SSB is that Bendis and Bagley had a hand in her creation, and her first appearance. From what I've seen, this is likely in the upcoming Spider-Man: Reign miniseries by Kaare Andrews. It takes place in a future timeline (with Peter Parker as an old man), not 616. I see the point that Quesada, Alex Ross, et al., have -- that an everyman character like Peter Parker/Spider-Man should not be linked to a supermodel -- but I liked her as a character and I suppose I saw her as a means to show that a supposed Everyman can have a soulmate (cf. Well if you read the spiderman that came out in free comic book it revealed a character called Jackpot who was quite clearly Mary Jane Watson.I think we should mention this in the article. Parralax

This article should deal with the growing popularity of the character. In sequence: she became he wife of Spider-Man in 1987 She became the main supporting character and first and main love interest in Ultimate Spider-Man (nearly a co-feature) 1n 1999 She is the first and main love interest in the movie franchise She became the main character of two novels in 2003 She became the main character of her own comic (Mary Jane and Spider-Man loves Mary Jane) in 2004

Does she appear in Spidey Super Stories, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man?

Anybody notice how Mary Jane's being used nowadays? She always appears in some media adaption first, and then Gwen Stacy comes and causes conflicts. That really annoys me. I agree, the deletion notice is insane. "No superpowers, even"? Characters like Lois Lane or Lex Luthor don't have superpowers either, and yet are suitably major. Besides, Mary Jane is actually a relatively important character. Consider the exposure that she has had recently due to media like the Spider-Man films with Kirsten Dunst. Controversies

Here I feel I must dispute the Controversies section under the entry for Mary Jane Watson. In this section it is stated that "...but fans vocally supported the feisty Mary Jane over the non-offensive Gwen Stacy. The pairing of Mary Jane and Peter Parker has become one of the true classic romances of the comic medium and the couple are considered to be one of the superhero genre's most beloved "super-couples," second possibly to Clark Kent and Lois Lane." Being alive at the time I can testify that most fans I knew always preferred Gwen Stacy to Mary Jane and to this day many of us resent the fact that Peter became involved with Mary Jane and today she is often portrayed as the true love of his life. To wit, in an article at Underground Online"Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard)" it states, "...and, in some Spidey fan's eyes, she's the real "true love" of their favorite hero." In an Itani Rosenbaum's April 17, 2007 column at Silver Bullet Comics Behind The Panels #7 - Spider-Man Blue, Rosenbaum states that "...Gwen was, is, and always will be, Peter’s first true love. She was the girl of his dreams."

I realise that there are many younger fans, particularly those raised on the animated cartoons and the movie who probably prefer Mary Jane to Gwen and who probably feel that Mary Jane is his true love, but to me it appears that there is enough of a disagreement, particularly among older fans, that it can be disputed that fans overwhelmingly prefer Mary Jane to Gwen.

Ultimate Beast

Bias and spelling errors

I read through half the article today and although I feel it is among the best the Wikipedia comic book community have created there is still much bias throughout the article and numerous spelling errors, it reads more like a personal essay than encyclopedia article. Who created Spider-Man isn't really related to the character though, at least not in the way it is being implemented into the article. Should zendaya be included in the other media's as mary jane

It's kind of hard to read, but I'd say based on your comments, no. If she was meant to be Mary Jane, she'd be called Mary Jane. Sources say they're not the same, such as Den of Geek, which is referenced in the Spider-Man: Homecoming article, and specifically says "this will be a very different thing, she’s not Mary Jane Watson, that’s not who the character is."[1] Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:48, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
