Persian[edit]

Old South Arabian[edit]

I read in an unabridged Arabic dictionary at my university library that the name derives from Old South Arabian (a Semitic language related to but in a separate branck from Classical Arabic), from the word "maryam" which means a soft-wooled sheep, or something to that effect. Although that does not rule out a common origin with the female name, or even that Old South Arabian was an intermediate so that the term could have ultimately come from "Beloved of Amon" via the sheep being known that way and hence the comparison with a tender, delicate woman; regardless, there is no mention of South Arabian anywhere in the article. I am living in Peru right now and am therefore physically unable to walk over to the Rutgers University library to properly reference this; but if anyone has access to one or more unabridged Arabic dictionaries, please look up the entry مريم and see what etymology they suggest. Merge proposal[edit]

I see that there is a merge proposal but no discussion. So I'm adding one here. -- MC

Merge - There is absolutely to have two separate discussions as these are variants of the same name. I would, however, say that the article(s) should be disambig pages pointing to people with the name. Oppose merge. The two names Maryam and Miriam may be etymologically related, but they are distinct enough to warrant separate articles. It would not be helpful to mix up the many people called Maryam with the many people called Miriam. BabelStone (talk) 12:29, 15 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
