Podolski[edit]

He didn't play against Lukas Podolski in the game against Bayern Munich, because he was substituted at half time and Podolski came on in the second half, so they "missed" each other. Therefore, I'll revert the part saying that he challenged Podolski. Rosh2610 00:10, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We should also think about removing the remarks about playing alongside Beauchamp because Beauchamp was the one substituted in for Matt. Also the remarks about "Sonic" Heffernan don't really belong in an article about Matt. -- 83.171.149.123 12:43, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

National availability[edit]

I have added the information about Spiranovic being available for both Australia and Croatia, as i believe it is topical and relevent. Please do not remove again without posting in discussion. ElZilcho

Info about his eligibility for three countries seems fine as he is still under 21 years of age and has not been capped at a senior level. However, I have removed the remarks about Croatia trying to "poach" him and the irrelevant comments about Simunic. Please retain a neutral POV on Wikipedia! Judgments, rumours, unverified info, personal opinions and weasel words are inappropriate for an encyclopedic entry. Thanks. 220.101.78.247 22:18, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Haha my bad, although it is common knowledge that Croatia tried to add him to their WC squad, unfortunately no news articles online exist about it. Mr. Poodles 07:35, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Matthew ŠpiranovićMatthew Spiranovic – Born in Australia, plays in Australia, plays for Australia, so I can see no reason why we're using the Croatian variant (which should be noted in the lead of course) in stead of the 'Australian' variant, which is the one used by the vast majority of reliable sources. Similar case to someone like Bernard Tomic IMO. Jenks24 (talk) 06:54, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment Jenks24, on the face of it inclined to agree with the RM, though your citation of WP:UCN isn't normally applicable to font issues. I doubt many Australian sports papers can carry French accents, let alone Slavic ones. But can you explain why the argument you use here seems to have moved on from the argument you made at Talk:Ana_Ivanovic/Archive_6#Requested_move_2012_.231 (significant since it remains the only straightforward biography on en.wp which was stripped of full fonts). In that RM you followed the line of argument that if a person appeared in sources without full fonts we should give them a name without full fonts "Not one of the 36 references in the article use the diacritic". But now you appear to firstly be arguing from nationality: "Born in Australia, plays in Australia, plays for Australia, so I can see no reason why we're using the Croatian variant". Wouldn't the inverse argument be "Born in Serbia, plays in Serbia, plays for Serbia, so I can see no reason why we're using the Australian variant". - which is inline with WP:SNOW consensus in WP:HOCKEY and WP:TENNISNAMES RFCs, but if its going to be applied to Matthew Špiranović, why not apply it to the 1 article which sticks out like a sore thumb in en.wp's BLP corpus? (incidentally I feel quite proud of having sourced the best-selling cover mentioned in Cosmopolitan Serbia). Would you feel inclined to put in a RM to undo what was done at the non-Australian's article? In ictu oculi (talk) 07:14, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • (edit conflict) Short answer, no, though I'm not sure I would bother to oppose if you or someone else started a RM. I still agree with the argument I made at Ivanovic's RM because, as I think I said to you not long ago, I still think COMMONNAME should apply to diacritics until a RfC gets up to say otherwise (a la MOS:DASH). However, even well before I took my break from Wikipedia, I had given up on participating in RMs for Eastern Europeans (yeah, there were others, but that's where the majority lay IIRC) that involved the addition/removal of diacritics as I didn't feel they were worth the time I was putting in.

I do realise that reasonable people can disagree though. In making this RM and making this specific opening statement I am trying to appeal to the people that I disagreed with, many of whom claimed it would be wrong for Wikipedia to use have a title that is not the same as that used on the subject's birth certificate, passport, etc. Personally, I feel COMMONNAME overrides these concerns, but surely if we can find a case where both arguments point in the same directions (like this one, I hope), that can only be a good thing? Jenks24 (talk) 07:40, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a good thing if you're posting a RM which is reopening the nonsense of checking sources with no accents to prove no accents. That has been dealt with and buried on en.wp, and doesn't need anyone misciting WP:COMMONNAME as being about fonts, which it isn't. Still no one will cite this as a precedent. You may wish to go through Category:Australian people of Croatian descent and find any others. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:28, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I will repeat: reasonable people can disagree. It would be great if you could just accept that there are different opinions on this – I am not "misciting" anything, I am simply stating my interpretation, one that you disagree with.

Yes, I had noticed there are plenty of articles like this. Spiranovic just happened to be the first one I came across so I decided to use it as a test case rather than making a bulk nomination. Jenks24 (talk) 08:45, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am only asking that your nom please cite correctly the correct guideline from WP:AT, i.e. not WP:UCN which includes "François Mitterrand (not: François Maurice Adrien Marie Mitterrand)" WP:UCN is not about fonts - since sources without full fonts don't have "ç". The section of WP:AT which relates to foreign names is WP:UE which is further down the page. In ictu oculi (talk) 08:54, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
