Previous titleholders[edit]

William II Canynges, Mrs S V Hare, Henry Chestre and Thomas Chester were apparently a few of the previous holders of the title Mayor(ess) of Bristol. There was also a titleholder in 1875. Presumably these were Lord Mayors. There may be scope for both articles (the recently created elected post and the historic one) with maybe a dab page at Mayor of Bristol instead. Historic mayors could be covered in History of local government in Bristol. Before 1899 they were just Mayors. The crucial difference is that the new post is directly elected by the people, the old post was elected by the councillors. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:51, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I suppose the incorrect inbound links could be dealt with by using a new redirect at Historic Mayor of Bristol (or better title) to History of local government in Bristol#Mayors. Does that sound sensible? In the longer term, my feeling is that Mayor of Bristol should be a dab page, with the current new content moved to Mayor of Bristol (elected). It seems unlikely that the current position will be the primary topic, when it has been a widely used term throughout history. -- Trevj (talk) 14:22, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we should open this up to a wider Bristol WikiProject audience, perhaps after we get a main page DYK (if we get one)? BTW, Mrs S V Hare was just the consort of the mayor at the time, mayoress is just an honorary title for the consort (or daughter) of the mayor. If the mayor has been female then they are still referred to as mayor or Lord Mayor. The mayoress term has now been dropped in favour of deputy Lord Mayor. Deletion of referenced relevant material[edit]

User:sport and politics made this revision removing material about the election result that I added earlier today, with the edit comment "too much detail". This material has direct relevance to the article and is referenced using a reliable source. I would like to discuss the concerns with this material and insert it again with whatever edits are required to address them. The edit comment doesn't give me much to go on; User:sport and politics presumably doesn't just mean that a demographic analysis of an election result is "too much detail" for an article about that election. Powers[edit]

There needs to be a subsection clearly displaying what the powers of directly elected mayors in the UK are relative to their respective city councils. For instance, do they have veto power over council decision? Do they get to appoint department heads? Etc...--Criticalthinker (talk) 18:24, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

rv George Ferguson detail moved here[edit]

A year ago a now-blocked user (for sockpuppetry) moved the mayoral detail from George Ferguson (politician) to here as the 2012–2016 section, leaving the George Ferguson (politician)#Mayor of Bristol section as 3 sentences, unbalanced for that article. I propose to move it back for the following reasons:

  • similar has not been done for the Marvin Rees detail, so the article is not consistent (or balanced)
  • it is opposite the approach used in Mayor of London where the detail is left in the people articles, with only major policies in the mayor article (NB I've not found any WP policy on the best approach)
  • it is excessively detailed for this article, but OK for the George Ferguson article (eg speeding ticket, six international flights, oil shale gas possibility at Avonmouth "hidden" until after election, the 6 para "Public image" section about him)
  • the 2012–2016 section (George Ferguson) section is about 75% of the articles written material now
