Aircraft use?[edit]

Hi, which aircraft was this engine used in? I searched the four sources given, no mention of 503 or aircraft? Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 14:49, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Compression Ratio is not correct for a gasoline engine![edit]

This lists a compression ratio of 16.0:1 up to 17.0:1. These are the same compression ratios for the MB 507 and MB 517 -- DIESEL -- engines. This engine is -- GASOLINE --. Typically, for gasoline engines the compression ratio is 6.8:1, or 7.5:1 or even 8.5:1 as higher octanes were used late in the war. The German Maybach HL230 gasoline tank engine was 6.8:1, while the British Rolls-Royce Meteor gasoline tank engine was 6:1 to 7:1. The gasoline aircraft engine from which this was derived, the Daimler-Benz DB 603 had a compression ratio of 7.5:1 on the left bank of cylinders, and 7.3:1 on the right.

There is some confusion going on here, mostly with the Daimler-Benz DB 602 diesel series used in airships and motor boats.
For convenience I will list the 500 series to see if it helps.
V-12 petrol (gasoline) engines
MB 503 - based on Daimler-Benz DB 603 (capacity of DB 603 - 44.5 litres) The subject of this article.
MB 509 - First engine type used in Panzer VIII Maus.
V-12 diesel engines
MB 500 - 66 litre capacity - Based on Daimler-Benz DB 602 that was used in LZ 129 Hindenburg and LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin II
MB 507 - 42 or 44 litre capacity
MB 512 - Replaced some MB 502 marine engines.
MB 517 - 42 litre capacity - Supercharged MB 507, second engine type used in Panzer VIII Maus.
V-16 diesel engines
MB 502 - 88 litre capacity
MB 512 - Supercharged MB 502
V-20 diesel engines
MB 501 - 144 litre capacity
MB 511 - Supercharged MB 501 (used in Schnellboot)
MB 518 - MB 511 with intercooler. Marine use.
The subject of this article is the MB 503 V-12 petrol engine, the MB 507 V-12 diesel engine has its own article and should only be linked to. The specifications in the infobox need to be changed to the those of the MB 503 V-12 petrol engine. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 10:41, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the compression figures from the infobox, could not replace them as it's unclear where these figures came from, the compression ratio of the DB 603 was around 7.5. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 10:52, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
