Split discussion[edit]

A recent discussion was raised at WP:Football HERE regarding the naming of this page. The discussion centred around whether the current club (founded in 2010) should share the same page as the original club (founded in 1909 and dissolved in 1934). The club's official website (History section) would appear to lay claim to the history of both the original club and Merthyr Tydfil F.C. in between. However, I would imagine that this is the case with the majority of phoenix clubs.

Personally, with a gap of just over 75 years between the new and old incarnations, I believe that simply adding the new club onto the page isn't really the best option. It would be good to gauge opinion here and perhaps look for a definite consensus on splitting or keeping the current article. The current club are a continuation of Merthyr Tydfil F.C., but also claiming the original Merthyr Town's history is probably a bit too much (given the gap between Town folding and Tydfil being formed). I'd support splitting off the original club to Merthyr Town F.C. (1909) and possibly merging Merthyr Tydfil F.C. here for the 1945–present incarnation(s). Number 57 07:57, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Number 57: Would we need more input before going ahead with this split? Kosack (talk) 12:21, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Kosack: As no-one has objected, do it and see what happens. Cheers, Number 57 18:09, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Kosack: Are you going to proceed with this? Cheers, Number 57 20:42, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It is on my to do list. I have a copy of Philip Sweet's pre war Merthyr Town F.C. history book which could help make a substantial article on the original club. Kosack (talk) 20:47, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kosack: Cool, I just noticed the split tag was still there. I'll remove it for now. Congrats on your elevation to adminship btw! Number 57 20:59, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, it's still on the back burner for now. Thanks very much! Kosack (talk) 21:01, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
as someone who came here out of curiosity as to why Merthyr Town play in the Southern League rather than the Welsh League, it answers very little about the history. I'd suggest that all 3 Merthyr incarnations share the same page as all are/were the representative team of Merthyr Tydfil. By way of comparison: my Team Hitchin Town FC's page includes the history and honours of Hitchin FC. Are the other Merthyr teams still in existence or did any co-exist? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stutley (talkcontribs) 19:56, 16 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
