Sexuality[edit]

I don't think his homosexuality is so notable to his life and art as to be included in the intro of his article. If he were a well known LGBT activist, it would be a different matter, but I feel uncomfortable as it currently stands. Should other articles start with saying the subjects are hetrosexual? Gareth E Kegg 17:24, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's not really the point. This article is a mess and a work in progress. I'm working on expanding it, and that blurb about his homosexuality is both factual and appropriate for the article--and it needs to go somewhere. At least give me until the cleanup template is off. --Adamrush 17:32, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The offending text[edit]

Michael Feinstein (September 7 1956) is an American singer, pianist and out homosexual. He is one of the most acclaimed interpreters credited with renewing the popularity of the repertoire known as the Great American Songbook.

Name of spouse[edit]

The Wikipedia article identifies Feinstein's spouse as Terrence Kane. All other sources on the web, including contemporaneous reports on their wedding, identify Feinstein's spouse as Terrence Flannery. I have no firsthand knowledge of which is correct, so I don't want to offer a correction. For all I know, Terrence uses both last names. Perhaps the primary authors of this biography would like to follow up. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.233.77.208 (talk) 03:10, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Terrance Flannery, per PBS show Michael Feinstein's American Songbook. MMetro (talk) 14:07, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

20 gallon blood donor[edit]

Michael Feinstein's name is on the 20 gallon donor plaque at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. I put that in the Personal Life section, and Softlavender took it out, saying it's admirable, but too trivial and un-encyclopedic. HUH? 160 contributions of blood +/ platelets to save the lives of others is trivial? Not to mention (and I DIDN'T mention it in the article) that there is a form one must fill out each time one contributes, which includes questions about one's sexual activities, and any man that has had sex with another man (or at least ADMITS to it) ONCE in his lifetime was placed on a life-long-no-donations-allowed list. (That may now have been changed to a one year deferral.) Since every donation is tested for HIV, this is homophobic, and obviously Michael Feinstein decided to lie in order to save lives. That's not trivial either. Would others please weigh in? Anonnymos (talk) 02:08, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't belong in an encyclopedia article about a musician. Softlavender (talk) 03:29, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Quite. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 11:05, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Not to mention it's uncited, there are dozens of Michael Feinsteins who live or have lived in NYC, and Michael Jay Feinstein has actually lived more outside NY than in. Softlavender (talk) 02:08, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

7th Heaven[edit]

How about a mention of his guest appearance in the 10th season of 7th Heaven, where he plays a high school music teacher about to be laid off due to lack of funding, and uses Gershwin's music to save a relationship, inspire a homeless student and make a statement about the importance of music education? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.225.17.141 (talk) 16:41, 24 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is a discussion at Talk:Great American Songbook#The future of this article as to how to deal with the uncited lists of songwriters, songs, and singers in that article. Please join the discussion if it interests you. Softlavender (talk) 03:16, 20 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
