Controversies

Per User:SeK612's edit summary, I am going to remove this section from the article. The info on Fedorova can be found 3 other times in the article. Conner wasn't disqualified and Rees was Miss Nevada USA, so no real need for this to be here. There are other more appropriate places for this, such as Tara Conner, Katie Rees and Miss USA. --After Midnight 0001 03:44, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Its official Barbados has turned down Miss Universe for 2008. It wont be a 2008 venue.

The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) has come forward and said they have rejected a bid to host the Miss Universe in Barbados for 2008 saying the pagents costs proved too prohibitive. Anyone know other places that have been proposed for 2008? -- Article: Barbados declines hosting Miss Universe 2008 - Wednesday, March 14th, 2007 Barbados Advocate newspaper CaribDigita 22:59, 14 March 2007 (UTC) Colombia an Brazil want to host....

Citation needed for Filipino marriages

THIS NEEDS CITATION: The very first Miss Universe (from Finland), the very first Miss Asia (from Taiwan), the very first Miss International (from Colombia) and the very first Miss ASEAN (from Malaysia) all married Filipinos. (This comment was left at the top of this discussion page {rather than in a new section, at the bottom: see WP:TALK) on 01:12, 1 June 2007 by an anonymous contributor using the IP address of 143.166.255.41)

Major re-organisation

I have completed a major re-organisation of our article today - including fixing the table display and syntax by adding a missing "|}" that meant that much text was not displaying at all.

I suggest that the next task should be trimming and organising the "trivia" sections, which shouldn't really be there at all (but, I must confess, I find rather interesting). Alice 11:28, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Element placement

The lead passage for this article is short and likely to remain short.

To avoid white space, I feel it is better that the lead is sandwiched between the Miss World Logo and the automatically generated Table of Contents (ToC)

On 15 December 2007 a registered editor made two successive edits (without explanatory edit summaries or explanation here on the article's discussion page) [1] & [2] that changed that element placement.

I asked for an explanation here but no rationale was forthcoming.

Consequently, I shall now revert the (again unexplained) edits made today by that same user. Alice 07:14, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Citation Needed

I put multiple citation tags in the article in accordance to wikipedia policies. The readers need to be assured that the material within it is reliable. The purpose of citing sources are to improve the overall credibility and authoritative nature of Wikipedia, to credit a source for providing useful material and to avoid claims of plagiarism, to show that the edit is not original research, to ensure that the content of articles is credible and can be checked by any reader or editor, to help users find additional information on the topic, and to reduce the likelihood of editorial disputes, or to resolve any that arise. Again, the threshold for inclusion for any information in Wikipedia in any is verifiability, not truth. "Verifiable" in this context means that readers should be able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source. Editors should provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is challenged or is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Articles should rely on reliable, third-party published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Sources should be appropriate to the claims made. Please see the definitions of verifiability [3] and citing sources[4]

Mexicans Booing

In 1993, Miss USA Kenya Moore was booed by the Mexicans during the pageant held in Mexico. Fourteen years later, Rachel Smith of USA was booed once again by the Mexicans, during the pageant night and the national costume parade days before.

I don't think it should state that the Mexicans booed. It was the audience in Mexico, not all the Mexicans.

Edits based on stats

If I add something to the article based on analysis of statistics on the pageant, for example, I count the number of times a particular country has been 2nd runner up and I get 20 and I say "With 20, Country X has the most 2nd runners up" Do I still need to reference this? It's something anyone can vevrify by looking at the stats themselves. 9454pedia (talk) 04:13, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

They don't know aliens don't exist.

In fact there's nearly a consensus that they do exist. It's not proper to call it Miss "Universe". Let alone it may be based on believing in Aliens but thinking all are uglier than you. That'd be terrible. --Leladax (talk) 21:25, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Armi Kuuselas title

"Until 1958 the Miss Universe title (like Miss America) was post-dated, so at the time Ms. Kuusela's title was Miss Universe 1965." Surely this is a typo? Should it not be "Miss Universe 1953" or do I miss something? 128.214.182.230 (talk) 19:46, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Country Tally is Wrong

The country tally is not accurate. England belongs up there despite not winning any, and so does COlombia even it only has one winner. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.107.168.88 (talk) 20:39, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Have you ever seen the Table Tally of any Olympics? Thatn is so crazy when you say that The Olympics Organization don't count on the numbers of total medals, it depends on the highest number of gold medals, follwed by silver and bronze orderly. If you said that so could you explain why USA (110 medals) only ranked 2nd after China (100 medals) in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics?

That is so crazy when you added Colombia, Israel to the top 10 successful countries of Miss Universe pageant when both have only 1 Miss Universe crown, while Colombia is higher than Puerto Rico (5 crowns). And see again, the table is sourced not WP:OR. See again, there is the source [5]. Angelo De La Paz (talk) 23:19, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

No, it is not crazy. The text plainly said the countries with the most top 5 placements....not which country has the most Miss Universe. That fact is already listed in the list of all the countries that have won...thus the tally itself is redundant. It does not list which countries had made the top 5 the most, but the placement of the top 5 of countries that have the most winners. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.80.236.213 (talk) 00:12, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Where? I don't see it. Read again, it wrote:

  • "Anyone who follows the Olympic Games or other sporting events will be familiar with the concept of the Medal Table, which ranks countries based on their first (gold), second (silver) and third (bronze) place finishes. Below is a similar table of the top rankings for the Miss Universe pageant, based on all results from the first event in 1952 to the most recent competition in 2008. Note that, from 1990 to 2000, there was only a "Top 3" with the third and fourth runner-ups positions eliminated."

I've read these lines 3 times and I don't see any mentioned to top 5 as you said. No more dispute, the table is sourced before. Angelo De La Paz (talk) 00:16, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

It said: "Top ranking". That plainly means the top 3 or top 5. SInce you seem to have your own interpretation of what this line means and I do not see why your interpretation is more legitimate than mine, so it is my advice that this text has to be re-written so there can be only ONE interpretation: THE FACTS. Only THEN, will there be no disputes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.80.236.213 (talk) 00:26, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Miss Universe Tally Change

I recommend changing the Miss Universe Tally to be both by number of wins and by Alphabetical Order.

Many other listings do it in this way, but I see that here it is listed by ranking of when the country last won, which I find to be irrelevant. IF all countries have the same amount of medals won in the Olympics, the countries are written in alphabetical order. That's the way it is for most competitions.

Incorrect Photo Caption that Can't Be Changed

On the photo for Riyo Mori, it says she is Miss Universe 2009 (but 2009 hasn't happened yet). If you click to edit it to 2007, it already says 2007. Weird. --69.183.223.56 (talk) 22:17, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
