worst?[edit]

How is the "worst" environmental disaster determined? How does this compare to a nuclear meltdown, oil spill, or asbestos or coal ash air.

Answer to your question.[edit]

While it is hard to say what differentiates something from all the rest to be the "worst", the "Love Canal" disaster was really really bad safe to say. It notable was the United State's first major environmental disaster not caused by natural phenomena (i.e. weather). It was so bad it was one of the leading causes, albeit not THE main cause, that lead to the formation of the EPA. It was the cause of the passing of numerous environmental laws and regulations that govern environmental responsibility and clean up, that even to this day remain in effect pretty much unchanged(except with the obvious updates over the years), including the environmental clean-up superfund and its corresponding list, to which "Love Canal" sat at No. 1 spot for almost fifty years.

This is all matter of public record. In fact, as far as answering the second half of your question as to comparing it to other disasters, the actually wiki "Love Canal" article, to which this stub's page is linked to, goes into a lot of detail about what made it so horrendous.[1] That page also has more than enough sources to help you make a determination (not that I'm going to list them all here). But, for the record, just doing a simple search for "Love Canal" brings up more than enough sources.

I direct your attention to a 2010 Time article that reviews major disasters of the 20th century, at which "Love Canal" was ranked No. 4, only beaten out by the likes of Chernobyl, Bhopal, & the Kuwaiti Oil Fires.[2]

If that is not enough, linked on the EPS's about page discussing its history and formation, is an article written by the Administer of the EPA for the region "Love Canal" is in, to which they say, and I quote, "Love Canal is one of the most appalling environmental tragedies in American history".[3] Mind you it's from 1979, but I'm pretty sure that qualifies as "Worst".

And if the word of a resident of Niagara Falls, NY still doesn't lend to the rating of "Worst", my I then suggest editing "one of the" in front of "worst", because at the very least, "Love Canal" warrants that rating.

P.S. Apologies if I replied in the incorrect protocol/format, this was my first time editing anything on a wiki, but I couldn't leave this topic unanswered.
