Tschaikovsky vs. Tchaikovsky[edit]
How should the name of the composer of the music for “Serenade” be spelled? Most Westerners now spell it Tchaikovsky, but City Ballet took up, during Balanchine’s lifetime, the spelling Tschaikovsky. Why? Because that’s how the composer spelled it when he was in New York in 1891. (My thanks to the reader who sent me a copy of his Carnegie Hall autograph from the Pierpont Morgan Library.)

- It's OK to refer to the Tschaikovsky Festival, because for better or worse that is the name it was given by its creators. Had they in their wisdom called it the Chykossky Festival, we would have to call it that here. But when referring to the composer himself, Wikipedia has decided he is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and that is the spelling we should use everywhere. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 21:31, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
Order of movements and a 5th movement[edit]
Balanchine re-ordered the 4 movements of Tchaikovsky's original score [1]. He also added a 5th movement - Finale. What is the music to this Finale? I can find plenty of refs to its existence, but nothing so far that tells me exactly what music is played. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 21:42, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

- Significantly expanded within 3 days of nomination. Copyvios possible violations were quotes and referenced accordingly. I suggest trimming or paraphrasing long quotes. I am partial to ALT1 since the original hook seems off considering the ballet is based on Mozartiana, which is Tchaikovsky's work. I do not see a strong connection with Mozart's music (except that it is a tribute to Mozart). If using Alt1, I suggest to include this minor wording change: "that George Balanchine ONLY started working on his ballet..." ALTs 2 & 3 are less interesting and source info should include page numbers given they are books/offline ref. Darwin Naz (talk) 00:27, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think I can trim the quotes anymore, but from past experience it should be fine. ALT0 is stem from the fact that "Mozart" is in the title but it's actually Tchaikovsky's music, which is not a well known score as far as I'm aware, but I'm fine with using ALT1 (now with the word "only").
