Merge[edit]

Can we consider merging Music of the African diaspora and Afro-American music, preferably under the title Music of the African diaspora? Afro-American music to me, and I think most people, refers to music of the United States, and it seems strange to see Latin American and Caribbean music there. Outside the Americas, music of African heritage is largely confined to Britain and on occasion Holland, France, Belgium and Germany which can be included in the new title. Thoughts please?-- Zleitzen(talk) 00:46, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree with Zleitzen, although wish to point out that the term 'Afro-American'
really relates to nothing at this point...much like the term 'Negro.' The idea of Afro-American
music being music of the United States is like saying 'Negro Music' is music of the United States.
Abiding by the general agreement in self-definition would seem to lead Wikipedia from using terms
like Afro-American (Negro music redirects to African American music for instance). And the term
would much less be used to describe those in the Caribbean, Latin America, etc...
as noted by Zleitzen. I am curious though, why Zleitzen does not consider South America and the
Caribbean as large containers of African heritage? These areas rivaled and surpassed the United
States in the slave trade. I believe a merge is not necessary as much as a redirection of
Afro-American music to African American music is needed.Jabali10 19:06, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Jabali[reply]

Leave and Expand both Afro-American music is notable enough to warrant its own article. And it's potential for expansion is very high provided that someone puts the work into it. Additionally, the African Diaspora article should be an overview of all the varioius types of Music of African peoples. CJ 12:50, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I recommend all discussion take place on the other page -- TimNelson 04:23, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Text dump[edit]

A collection of sections from different relevant articles can be found here: Wikipedia:WikiProject African diaspora/Music of the African diaspora text dump. It is hoped that the text dump would help with the development of the structure of this article. -- Zleitzen(talk) 05:13, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Scope[edit]

Hmm, what is the scope of this article. I just brought over the lead from the existing article, but I'm still wondering: is this article about all music by descendants of African people not in Africa? What about blues, jazz, rap, and rock music which has gone back to Africa (Ali Farka Toure)? I guess I'm wondering a few other things, but this is my first question. Smmurphy(Talk) 04:54, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. My take is that its an article about music by descendants of African people thoughout the world. Focusing primarily on genres, and ideally exhibiting chronological and geographic threads. So we have something like this:
  • Lead. Three paragraphs of overview.
  • Geographical sections
    • Caribbean
    • Europe
    • United States (and North America)
    • Latin America
    • Elsewhere
  • Analysis and literature on the subject
Each geographical section, perhaps no more than three paragraphs each, would cross reference each other, and basically be an overview that allows for wiki-links to the many articles such as Jazz, Ska, Hip Hop etc.-- Zleitzen(talk) 05:26, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good starting point, in my opinion. Smmurphy raises an interesting question as well. I definitely think the influences and cross influences of music of the African diaspora, including those returning to African music (Touré, Dibango, Fela Kuti etc.) should be mentioned in the artilce. For the moment, I suggest to keep the Analysis and literature on the subject as inclusive as possible. The structure of my online attention and availibity of useful sources make me a somewhat dissipated and frittering user, but this is definitely a project to which I would like to contribute. ---Sluzzelin talk 15:24, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've added some basic material on the Caribbean as a start.-- Zleitzen(talk) 00:45, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

United States Section[edit]

Why is there almost nothing on the United States section of this article? Also, why is there no mention of African-American Spirituals? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sdschwar (talkcontribs) 15:14, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to begin writing a section about the United States. I hope others will contribute. I only have researched about spirituals, and so I am hoping that someone will continue where I leave off. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sdschwar (talkcontribs) 01:24, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

Proposal ended with merging due to lack of discussion.

I propose merging Black music into Music of the African diaspora. In the context of music, the articles describe the same thing. Comparing List of musical genres of the African diaspora and Black music#Genres also indicates that there is no difference between the entities. The separate list may be also worth merging due to being messy and lacking of the sources. Solidest (talk) 19:27, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
