Global Composite Checklist[edit]

The Global Composite Checklist lists taxonomy in a very shabby way with "Synonym of Unknown" for many Mutisia species. Until they get their act together and decide why something is a synonym and what it is a synonym of, I'd like to suggest that we don't glorify their list in Wikipedia, but instead merge the list of "unaccepted" species names with the "accepted" ones, and list the GCC site simply under "external links". The few times I've tried to use the Global Composite Checklist I've had a similar reaction. However, I'm not sure that just making the list be uncited is necessarily a step forward. The advantage of the status quo is that at least we know where the data came from (assuming it really does reflect the Global Composite Checklist). Aren't there some better sources for Mutisia? If not a full-fledged monograph, perhaps some journal articles or something? One web site which is generally fairly reliable is GRIN, but in this case it seems to just have some of the species (which is not unusual; GRIN doesn't try to list all species). It's not clear why they list some as synonyms. Take Mutisia acutifolia S.F.Blake which is said to be a synonym of "unknown". If you click on the latin name the page which comes up says the source of the name is Tropicos. So I went to www.tropicos.org and searched for "Mutisia acutifolia". There's no indication there that it's a synonym of anything. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:12, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Neat investigation! So it appears to be the result of some database problems, and should not be followed here. I'll change the page accordingly. Nadiatalent (talk) 19:53, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
