Awards

I have created an awards page for n sync. It is new and so the list is incomplete. Please contribute to List of awards received by 'N Sync.-KingdomHearts25 —Preceding undated comment added 14:09, 3 March 2010 (UTC).

Potential libelous statement?

The second sentence in the article sounds dubious and possibly libelous: "The group's launch to fame was financed by the fraudulent boy band mogul Lou Pearlman." Was he convicted of or admitted commiting fraud? The article mentions that the case was settled out of court. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.168.158.194 (talk) 14:11, 10 September 2008 (UTC) I --- I Want You Back - MODERATE HIT????--- It peakes at No 5 R&R CHR/Pop Airplay chare, spent 28 weeks in top 50 before being removed to recurrent chart, sold 600,000 copies in 8 weeks and stopped only due to label's decision to remove it from catalog. Critical Acclaim

Removed:

run-of-the-mill generic mish-mash that has not recieved critical acclaim

for obvious reasons. Attempts to sum up the critical reception of a band, work of art, etc., should make an attempt to be exhaustive and fair enough to pass NPOV muster. Also, do critics whose praise is described as "acclaim" review NSYNC at all? If not, it's nonsensical to say that they haven't received critical acclaim--of course they haven't. Neither has my Mom's stuffing (which is a hell of a lot better than NSYNC, but that's neither here nor there). --Larry Sanger

Cash-in

I'm just pleased that "emetic seasonal cash-in" has survived from when I originally wrote the article!

Redirects

The number of redirects to this article seems to be a lot higher than normal. This will have the effect of increasing its importance as far as Google's PageRank algorithm is concerned. When people search for Nsync on Google, this article will appear higher than expected on the list. In general, this is true of any article on Wikipedia, which is normally good for the project. The high amount of internal wiki crosslinking makes us look important to Google, so our pages appear high on any search list. However it's only a matter of time before product placement people notice this effect and start making use of it (if they haven't already). We should be watching out for this -- Derek Ross

Five articles

Why are there five articles, exactly the same but with slightly different titles, for a cultural blip? Will we have Partridge Family, Partridge family partridge family next? Danny

...if they're "exactly the same...", what you're probably looking at, Danny, is actually redirects.
Redirects aren't articles. And, they're inevitable whenever something's official name is so fuckin' weird that nobody remembers the official spelling. :P
Sidenote: "cultural blip" does not exactly reek of NPOV. Please watch your tone. The band was one of the most popular of the late '90s and early 2000s, and its members continue to sell albums at a respectable rate today, albeit now mostly solo efforts. In the long run, I do doubt they'll exactly be our generation's Beatles, and they're certainly I doubt ever going to be considered the next Mozart a century or two from now, but nonetheless we are writing for today's culture, and they've made a significant impact on current pop culture for about a DECADE which is far longer than most such bands even last. Not to mention, the only way to tell if they're a true "cultural blip" is to see if anyone's even heard of them say, a hundred years from now, or three hundred, or a thousand (you never know. Certain things randomly seem to lie dormant in the dusty annals of history for years and years and years, only to randomly get picked up and used as a symbol or popular subject or whatnot years later. Battle of Thermopolae, anyone?)... and of course, by the time any of us could really tell what's popular and influential then, we'll be dead. ;) 4.238.21.119 06:13, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Name

The article has been renamed according to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (trademarks). ed g2stalk 01:28, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Origin of name

It appears there is some argument over the origin of the group's name (whether it came from the last letter of each band member's name or the comment from Justin's mom that they're so "in sync"). As a former fanatic of the band, I've heard both. Rather than have the article pick one as the origin, I'm going to re-word it to include both. Tygartl1 16:09, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Second N & Lance's nickname

I think there needs to be some discussion on whether to list the second N as referring to Jason Watkins (the original bass singer for the group) or attribute it to Lance's nickname "Lansten/Lanston/Lanceton/Lanceten". I would personally like to include the info about Jason as long as it's a citable fact. Also, can we come to some consensus on how to spell Lance's so-called nickname? Please vote (and include reasons!) and we can get this decided once and for all. I know I can't be the only one tired of the silly edit war on how to spell a nickname they probably only came up with to fit the spelling of the group name. Tygartl1 15:57, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

A quick google search for "lansten nsync" gives 3,350 results, "lanston nsync" gives 77 results, "lanceten nsync" gives 97 results, "lanceton nsync" gives 264 results. Based on this, my vote is for Lansten. Tygartl1 16:30, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Consistent Name Spelling

I noticed that the band's name is spelled several different ways in the artical ('N Sync, *NSYNC, N*SYNC). Shouldn't only one form be used? The band's official website spells it like "*NSYNC" with the asterisk first and in all caps, so perhaps that would be the best form to use. 24.144.151.182 02:07, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

To clear a few things up...

1) *NSYNC has NOT officially broken up. As of July 2005, they are still on "hiatus...indefinitely" (direct quote from Justin Timberlake).

2) None of the band members have openly expressed any dislike for one another. In fact, many of them still hang out together.

3) Just because they are a "boy band" with predominately "teenybopper" fans (most of whom outgrew that phase at least five years ago) does not mean that they lack talent or that they are manufactured, gay, posers, etc.

4) *NSYNC still has a very strong following. This does not mean that these people are "living in denial." People ARE allowed to enjoy an artist or artists even after they've "moved on."

There's no need for hostility; the person is clearing some things up. Evidently that need to be because the article says the group was active from 1995 - 2002, and I dispute that. As far as I'm concerned, as long as a band or group has not broken up or retired, they're still active whether they're on hiatus or not.

It's odd that their record label never gave the group a time frame upon which they had to produce the remaining albums to which they are contracted. Timberlake is obviously doing his own music and now 5 years after their last activity together, they still haven't produced another album. They could do what the Backstreet Boys have done by re-grouping and changing their sound. So, in 50 years when all the *NSYNC members may all be dead, I guess the contract is null and void. Jtpaladin 17:33, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
According to Bass, the group IS broken up. Check the introduction for source and the "Plans for future albums" section for details MgCupcake 23:22, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

= Notoriety of members ==i love them

If we're going to mention Bass's recent coming out, should we also mention the newsworthy romantic entanglements of other members? Haven't the affairs of Timberlake been covered at length in the medi? It seems odd to only mention Bass's boyfriend, but not Timberlake's girlfriend(s). -Will Beback 22:04, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

I've removed that information, those are personal information bits which should be put on the individual pages of the performers, not on the page about the band as a whole. This is a page about the band and their accomplishments together, not the sexual orientation or dating history of the individual performers. Mentioning one persons sexual orientation or one persons dating history serves no purpose on this page whatsoever. Batman2005 13:42, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
I disagree. There are other mentions of their personal lives in that part of the section, and the public nature of his relationship seems to me to merit a mention in this article. Twin Bird 20:43, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

YouTube links

This article is one of thousands on Wikipedia that have a link to YouTube in it. Based on the External links policy, most of these should probably be removed. I'm putting this message here, on this talk page, to request the regular editors take a look at the link and make sure it doesn't violate policy. In short: 1. 99% of the time YouTube should not be used as a source. 2. We must not link to material that violates someones copyright. If you are not sure if the link on this article should be removed, feel free to ask me on my talk page and I'll review it personally. Thanks. ---J.S (t|c) 06:41, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Jedi?

Whatever happened to *NYSYNC appearing in the Star Wars movie Attack of the Clones? Banaticus 09:08, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Entertainment Weekly says heck yes http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,192561~10~0~behindnsynccameos,00.html and has an interview with Lance about it. They're quite reputable. But apparently they were WELL hidden, killed off early, and only three band members were present, so that'd be why it's not apparent in the final film. Who knows. I do find it funny how Justin Timberlake insists that NSYNC wouldn't be able to accomplish anything musically when the material from his last two albums was the exact direction NSYNC was headed. "Cry Me a River" in particular is classic NSYNC, not to mention Timbaland is so extremely pop right now. Imagine if all of Justin Timberlake's solo success had been him with the group... they'd be legendary. What i don't understand is how Justin Timberlake can can just disown that group like he did. He co-wrote the majority of the songs from their second and third album anyway lmfao so what's the big deal. Celebrity to (Justified) to (FutureSex/Love Sounds) is EXACTLY the direction NSYNC was headed, Justin Timberlake is just too much of a self-centered douche to admit it. lol as if his solo material is some monumental work of art outside of pop. It's pop at it's MOST pop. lol? --The Knowledge 08:37, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

POSSIBLE COMEBACK???

I recently read somewhere that NSync may be making a comeback and may be going into the studio to record a new album within the next year or two. Can anyone get a confirm on that? --Chrismaster1 (talk) 22:54, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

In need of a turtle?

In the "Formation and International Success" section, the article mentions (without citation) that the group was looking for a new person, and was interviewing "in need of a turtle" but without fruition.

What is a "turtle"? If this is a musical term, it needs to be defined within the article, and in a dictionary. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.129.199.111 (talk) 02:12, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Title of the article; variations of *NSync

Given that * (the "star" character) is a character easily found on Standard English keyboards (it's not a symbol like "♥" is) and since Wikipedia:Article titles#Special characters says to avoid the use of apostrophes (but makes no mention of "*"), shouldn't this page be at *NSync instead of 'NSync, the same way we have a *NSYNC (album) article? Banaticus (talk) 23:52, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Most of the article references the band as 'N Sync, but the article is made very confusing by the fact that variations are listed in prominent places: *NSYNC is the header of the infobox, and two distinct variations of 'N Sync are found in the first sentence of the article ('NSYNC and *NSYNC). For the sake of consistency, this definitely needs to change. I'll provisionally edit these to the form most commonly used in the article, 'N Sync, but I understand that this is not without controversy, and is only a temporary measure until a true consensus is made. --kronn8 (talk) 02:07, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't know why Harout reverted your change, but I agree with you. There is inconsistency within the body of text. What is the actual official name of the group? How do they spell it? With space, without space, using * or '? From their website nsync.com it seems to be *NSYNC: Copyright 2012 *NSYNC, All Rights Reserved --Krystaleen 05:10, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
While I understand that the title of the article is spelled NSync possibly due to MOS:ALLCAPS, sources seem to spell the name of the group with caps. Why use NSync in the content? Is it their original style? Shouldn't we make all NSyncs into NSYNC for consistency sake?--Harout72 (talk) 06:08, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
I have no preference, but there needs to be consistency. Either change all to NSync or to NSYNC is okay with me. Are we sure the official name is in all caps?--Krystaleen 05:48, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
I have changed all occurence of 'N Sync to *NSYNC.--Krystaleen 14:40, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
That's probably the best.--Harout72 (talk) 15:22, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
You missed one -- I'll request that it be moved. *NSync still redirects to 'N Sync. Banaticus (talk) 05:37, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
  • Erm, this needs wider discussion. Everything related to the band is at 'N Sync, and there was very strong opposition to this idea last time. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:34, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

'N Sync*NSYNC – Even though nobody disagreed with my earlier statement of May of 2011, since nobody agreed with it either, I'm treating this as a potentially controversial move request. Given that * (the "star" character) is a character easily found on Standard English keyboards (it's not a symbol like "♥" is) and since Wikipedia:Article titles#Special characters says to avoid the use of apostrophes (but makes no mention of "*" or the star character), and given that the band themselves appear to use the star character (not the apostrophe) on their official website, this page should be located at *NSYNC instead of 'NSync, the same way we have an *NSYNC (album) article. 'N Sync*NSYNC – Per the article (with source), the band's name is an acronym for the last letter of the first name of each of the band's original members: Justin, Chris, Joey, Jason, and JC. This version of the name is common in the press, slightly more popular as a Google search (1.4 million results for "nsync" with quotes; 1.2 million for "n sync" with quotes), the band is listed under this name on retailers such as iTunes, and their name appears as such on all of their album covers. Some editors may oppose the asterisk per MOS:TMRULES, though this rule generally applies in instances where the stylization is part of a trademark/advert and not the actual name (see the Macy's example), but I would also consider NSYNC and 'NSYNC as appropriate moves as well. –Chase (talk / contribs) 05:08, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

  • It points to MOS:CAPSACRS. *NSYNC is still common usage, the "scuba" and "laser" examples wouldn't apply. –Chase (talk / contribs) 16:50, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
  • As stated in the OP, Macy's is the name of the brand with Macy*s only being used in logos and ads. *NSYNC is actually the name of the band per retailer listings. And what about the two alternatives given in the request? –Chase (talk / contribs) 16:23, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
  • Based on your reasons, Chase, I'd go with NSYNC SNUGGUMS (talk · contribs) 18:40, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
  • Strong support only NSYNC and strongly oppose keeping it at the current title, which looks nearly as absurd as deadmaus. Red Slash 08:01, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
