Name change[edit]

Please can the Museum name be changed to National Science and Media Museum as of March 2017? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scienceandmediamuseum (talkcontribs) 15:44, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Done. -Lopifalko (talk) 18:00, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure of the dates but when the museum opened it was "The National Museum of Photography". It added the "Film and Television" suffix later. Oddly, even the official site has this wrong! (And I am 100% sure of this, I was there on the opening day and the first member of the public to enter) The orginal sign: https://www.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/sites/default/files/styles/smg_carousel_zoom/public/2017-03/1983-Museum-exterior.jpg The revised sign: https://www.england101.com/assets/img/england101/regions/images/national-museum-of-photography-film-and-tv.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.50.61 (talk) 13:35, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion[edit]

How about mentioning the fact that the NMPFT is infamous for having broken and/or generally nonfunctioning exhibits? --^pirate 18:35, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, they have fixed quite a lot of them so I have been told, they have more money now! --Charlie 17:51, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe a change is required for re-naming the whole article and links to it in view of the name change on December 1st 2006 to National Media Museum wtwjgc 13:10, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gripes[edit]

"In 2007/2008 the NMPFT plans to open a London venue. In 2006/2007 the Museum plans to rename itself to the National Media Museum..." HATE THIS!!! Its uniqueness added to the muesums appeal - bugger! Does this mean all of this is going to have be revised soon? --Thumbsucker-UK 11:50, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Dame Who Talked To An Entire City![edit]

User 195.27.20.35 wrote:

"It was founded in 1983 as the result of long term pressure for such a museum and its location came about through a chance conversation at a dinner between Dame Margaret Weston, the former head of the Science Museum, and the City of Bradford."

As talented as Dame Margaret is, I don't think she was talking to an entire city! Is "mayor of" or "someone from the" missing from the sentence?

Renaming[edit]

I've just removed the following from the sentence about the rename in 2006:

; down to the launch of a new £3m Experience TV gallery, which replaced their former gallery about televisions, the closure of the Museum of the Moving Image in London and partly down to extent that Media has changed since 1999 (the Museum's last redevlopment programme)

I've done this for two reasons: first, the language needed attention ('down to' is not only rather colloquial for an encyclopaedia, but more importantly may well not be understood by readers whose first language is not English). But when considering how to reword it, I realised that without sources to back it up, it is editorialising.

If anybody has published sources for this reasoning, please restore it, with references.

While I'm on the subject of the wording, the bit about the being the first IMAX is not clear. I've improved it slightly, but it seems to me that the parenthesised remark '(with a second screen opening in the UK some fifteen years later)' is misleading and unhelpful. It should be replaced by 'until the second IMAX installation was opened at ... in ...', but I haven't got that information. Does anybody else? --ColinFine 23:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

TV-am Studio[edit]

Didn't I remember when TV-am had a presence in the National Media Museum in the early 1990s that it had featured a full sized replica of the Good Morning Britain set? Could that be featured in the article if true? --Wrh1973 (talk) 22:46, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

Hi there - I'm from the museum and would be happy to advise on updating the entry - especially as the final section "The museum's future" is all about plans for 2007, obviously a bit out of date now! Get in touch and I'll be happy to help! Peer Lawther (talk) 11:19, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
