Composition[edit]

Good to see this article written. One thing I am wondering with particular regard to the Fleetwood Mac version of the song - if it is wrongly credited to Little Willie John on their albums, how do we credit the song on the various Fleetwood Mac album articles that feature it? Do we stick to the credit on the album or correct it? Bretonbanquet (talk) 20:51, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's certainly credited to Little Willie on my 1989 Greatest Hits CD. Do other, more recent compilations, still credit it to him? As Mertis is Little Willie's brother, I suppose it's possible that a legal case over rights may never have been pursued or needed - it's all in the family. So far as album credits are concerned, my practice has been simply to go with what is stated, though there may be more guidance at WP:SONGS - or, if not, that Wikiproject would be the place to ask. As far as I know, all Fleetwood Mac albums credit it to Little Willie John, and other Mac blues songs are also dubiously credited. Some songs have different composers listed on different compilations. It might be worth asking the Wikiproject, or maybe a note could be left under the track listings on the relevant articles to explain the situation? Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:08, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'll raise it at the Wikiproject - there is a need for guidance to ensure some consistency of approach. Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:12, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Thinking about it, this has surely come up before - maybe they have a system already. Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:15, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done - we shall see. Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:26, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well done boys. Trust me to open a can of worms ! You are right, this situation must have come up previously - "Gin House Blues" is a case in point where Ghmyrtle and I 'discovered' incorrect accreditation.

Beware the WP:OR police! Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:02, 20 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again.... This source says that Mertis "wrote much of the song" and that Willie then "worked on it and eventually finished it off". It also says that Mertis "restored Willie's name as co-writer in 2008". If that is true - and that earlier sources gave the sole credit to Mertis - why does the image in the infobox show Willie as the sole writer? Ghmyrtle (talk) 17:49, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

James Brown covered this song. As did a Eva Cassidy dueting with Chuck Brown. 2601:600:9000:E3ED:C049:756B:BD11:880E (talk) 00:10, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
