I am not sue that Netherburn should be in both Category:Villages in South Lanarkshire and Category:Hamlets in Scotland, as this seems to be contradictory as to the settlement's status. The article currently calls it a hamlet rather than a village so the latter seems more appropriate and perhaps the former could be replaced by Category:Populated places in South Lanarkshire? I agree this is inconsistent. What marks the distinction between a hamlet and a village, and is it purely population or other characteristics? Crowsus (talk) 01:02, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am struggling to find an agreed definition. I suspect population is a factor, but would think number and density of buildings could also be taken into account. I know one historic factor in the UK was whether it had a church or not. Dunarc (talk) 19:40, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It should be in both Category:Villages in South Lanarkshire and Category:Hamlets in Scotland until/if Category:Hamlets in South Lanarkshire is created since a hamlet is usually treated as a sub category of a village. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:52, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
