Newport Wales[edit]

Is there a particular reason this city is the main article? It doesn't seem to me that when I search for Newport I should be taken to any other page first but this article page. Awotter 01:09, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Newport (Monmouthshire, Wales) is the largest and most important Newport in the world. If you want Newport News or Newport Beach etc then just type in the extra word. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.5.216.227 (talkcontribs) 12:53, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I would concur: "Newport" is a common placename in the UK, as you can see from the list of other places, but Newport in Gwent, Wales is the only one which I would consider notable enough to be classed as "the" Newport. I can't speak for the rest of the world though! AndyKali (talk) 06:58, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure. But to have it singled out in the page intro is confusing. I've merged it into the list of places in Wales, as the page seems to be tidier that way.
In any case, is there any point in giving something as a primary meaning on any disambiguation page, especially if it has "(disambiguation)" in its title? Somebody looking for this will likely have already searched for Newport before coming here, and so would be deliberately visiting this page in order find out what meanings there are, rather than what somebody has deemed to be the primary meaning. -- Smjg (talk) 11:05, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Newport Gwent[edit]

To clarify things, I added to the article the fact that the main article refers to the city in the area of Gwent in Wales. This avoids confusion with Newport, Pembrokeshire, Wales, and compensates for the fact that Newport is its own "county" by using the preserved county. I'm used to thinking of the place as "Newport (Gwent)", which is the name its rail station is given so as to avoid confusion with Newport, Essex. AndyKali (talk) 07:02, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Newport which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 18:44, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Now linked at Talk:Newport, Wales
(That's Newport, Wales, not the other Newport, Wales of course. Not that there's any potential for confusion. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:32, 27 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, moving this to a disambiguation page for no reason is now causing total confusion - with Newport South Wales and Newport Rhode Island being placed at the top of the disambiguation page to try to relieve the confusion - basically as it was when Newport was the lead article. Why people with nowt better to do feel they have to change something that works perfectly fine is beyond me. Ah wellPwimageglow (talk) 20:01, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. Perhaps some US readers could explain whether the Rhode Island one is particuarly well-known even in the US and why. Its population is over an order of magnitude smaller than the (I think, original?) Newport in Gwent.

All the Newports[edit]

I came here after seeing a TV reference to Newport in the Isle of Wight (England). This is not just a (former) Parliamentary constituency, as implied in the article at present, but the main town in the Isle. There are evidently also other places called Newport apart from the best known ones in South Wales and Rhode Island. For the purposes of disambiguation, I suggest it would be useful for the opening section to list as many as possible of the places called Newport, with links to relevant articles where they exist.109.150.72.36 (talk) 23:33, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The page already has an extensive list of places called Newport. It is found in the sub-section 'Places' and includes Newport, Isle of Wight. Just scoll down, or click on the contents index box on the right. Daicaregos (talk) 06:49, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe part of the problem here is that the standard alphabetical ordering puts "Places" near the bottom of the page. A new reader unfamiliar with this convention might expect to see all places near the top of the page, as this is the prime use of the word "Newport" (on its own). But this convention applies to all disambiguation pages, so no easy way round it. I think we've already had multiple discussions about this and the two places at the top are there because they are the "primary uses". Martinevans123 (talk) 11:40, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to BOLDly put the Places section at the top, as is done elsewhere. MOS:DP only suggests alphabetical ordering if there is no compelling reason not to or no consensus otherwise (and draws attention, itself, to WP:IAR when doing so). In fact, on most dab pages half for places and half for other stuff like this, Places is already bumped to the top with other sections after that (only) ordered alphabetically. This is, I would say, even a long-standing convention. Most apropos, Newtown (disambiguation) has been that way for some time.
Llew Mawr (talk) 21:18, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's an improvement. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:04, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Newport, Mississippi[edit]

Does anyone know why Newport, Mississippi has a "see Mississippi Highway 3"? The Newport I am familiar with sits at an intersection of Mississippi Highway 14 and Mississippi Highway 429, east of I-55 and Highway 3 is on the west side. -- Otr500 (talk) 20:47, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
