Junior Office under Heath[edit]

Did he not hold junior office for a time under Heath?

Was there not a dispute as to whether he resigned (presumably what he claimed) or was sacked (presumably what Heath claimed)?Paulturtle (talk) 00:24, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

He resigned, partly because Heath had kept him waiting after a long journey without offering him so much as a sandwich but also because (as he apparently told Heath) he was unhappy with Heath's economic U-turn, which he thought compromised the principles upon which the party had been elected. He later said that for him it was proof that decisions made in anger could sometimes be good ones. Meltingpot (talk) 11:27, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that was his version. But then, he wouldn't be the first person to flounce out of a meeting shouting "I resign!" when he realised he was being sacked, nor the first to pretend that there were deep disagreements of principle involved (I make no comment on whether he did or didn't - I wasn't there). Ashtray[edit]

If somebody has a source, it's probably worth mentioning Gordon Brown's famous line that he had "no in tray, no out tray, just an ashtray", circa 1988-90. Especially given that he was a famous chainsmoker.Paulturtle (talk) 01:51, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
