Fair use rationale for Image:Niconico donga screenshot.png[edit]

Image:Niconico donga screenshot.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Onomatopoeia[edit]

This article describes "niconico" as being an onomatopoeic word for smiling. Now, smiling is largely a silent activity. Can anyone explain in which way "nico nico" can be called onomatopoietic? The Japanese use onomatopoeia in a different way than English speakers do. There are countless sounds and actions that are assigned words in Japanese that have no English counterparts. Often, It's a sound descriptor for an action, but the action doesn't necessarily have to make a sound. I wish I could drum up some examples from the top of my head but I'm blanking, other than the obvious ones like "doki doki" for a heartbeat. AtaruMoroboshi (talk) 02:26, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipededia suggests the term "ideophone" for the type of onomatopoia you are talking about. I suggest using that term instead of "onomatopoia" because for most people "onomatopoia" would refer to an imitation of sound. To me it sounds really weird to call a word for a silent activity such as smiling onomatopoetic. "doki doki", by the way, seems to qualify for this narrower sense of onomatopoia. Traffic Ranking[edit]

According to Alexa, Nico Nico Douga is now the 13th most popular site in Japan, rather than 6th, as the article states. It looks like they had a massive drop in traffic back in May, which they still haven't recovered from. Any ideas what happened? --75.190.161.228 (talk) 21:02, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the site has seen it's peak traffic. I have update the sentence in the opening paragraph to reflect it's current ranking, although maybe it may be better to find a source that indicated its historic popularity. --Nabulator (talk) 21:18, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Move[edit]

I propose moving Nico Nico Douga to Nico Nico Doga or Nico Nico Dōga. On [English] Google Nico Nico Dōga pulled up more results than Nico Nico Doga, but those results counted in Nico Nico Dōga counted those in Nico Nico Doga. Nico Nico Doga pulled up approximately 7,020,000 while Nico Nico Dōga pulled up approximately 7,330,000. Nico Nico Douga pulled up approximately 1,920,000 results. The official English spelling (as seen in the logo) is Nico Nico Douga, thus this is what we use. There is no need to move.--十八 07:28, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Financing[edit]

"where 100 million yen (US$948,000) of that comes from paid premium memberships" Wait what? 525¥ × 800,000 members = 420M ¥. In which case their income would far exceed their hosting costs.

"Copyright Problems"?[edit]

The title of this section in the article doesn't speak for the rest of the section.

(It is more like "Fighting Copyright Problems" than "Copyright infrigement of Nikovideos" like the section title implies).

Move Page to "Niconico"[edit]
