Untitled[edit]

Dear Coren.. The new article is created to correct the evident errors of two different types of skating; the old and very large Tour skating and the modern Nordic skating. These two different types of skating are also very different from each other, thus it´s important to respect the the terms of skating. It serves no purpose to confuse the two terms with each other as there are competitions and matters of equiptment, marketing etc involved. Best wishes; Maarten Odde de Bonniot, project chief of Skating association of Finland

Name?[edit]

Should it be called "Nordic-skating" with a hyphen or just "Nordic skating"? Is it an established term, or is it just a way do describe "Nordic tour skating"? Tomas e (talk) 10:13, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What's in a name??[edit]

I guess the problem is trying to translate a foreign word, ie Swedish "långfärdsskridsko" (or Finnish "retkiluistelu" or Norwegian "turskøyte") into English. "Nordic Skating" and "Tour Skating" are just two possibilities . The name "Nordic Skating" may be modern, but this type of skating goes back over a century in Sweden.

Broken links[edit]

There are now many broken links caused by the deletion of material from the Tour_skating article. In addition, there are many links to Tour_skating article from external sites. Perhaps the deleted material should be re-inserted in Tour_skating, and a section added about Netherlands style tour skating(nl toerschaatsen) with proper references such as: [1]

I wouldn't mind having these two articles put together with explanations on different national styles/habits of tour skating discussed in the same article. Tomas e (talk) 10:16, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I also think that it is natural to have it all in one article. The Dutch and Swedish style of recreational skating are two sides of the same coin. Both are done on natural ice and for recreational purposes (not competition). Equipment differs, but so do "Nordic skating" in Sweden ("långfärdsskridskoåkning") if you compare skating done in clubs and private skating. The Nordic skating article was created by MaartenOddeB (talk · contribs) and I can not find any discussion that lead to the creation of the Nordic skating article, or am I missing something? --Kr-val (talk) 11:43, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've been working on a test version [2] of merging the 2 articles, with the help of people on the Utsidan skating forum. But now I have to balance "Wikipedia is NOT a collection of links" with "Cite references"

OK I've merged in the 2 articles and added some explanations of different styles to Tour skating and Nordic skating (no hyphen) is now a REDIRECT to there. Ddermott (talk) 21:31, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
