What the heck were the Northern Counties League doing?[edit]

OK, I think I've found the tables for the Northern Counties area:

  1. http://www.nonleaguetables.co.uk/cgi-bin/lt.cgi?t=1960NCLC%201960-1961&f=1
  2. http://www.nonleaguetables.co.uk/cgi-bin/lt.cgi?t=1960NCLL%201960-1961&f=1
  3. http://www.nonleaguetables.co.uk/cgi-bin/lt.cgi?t=1960NCOUNT%201960-1961&f=1
  4. http://www.nonleaguetables.co.uk/cgi-bin/lt.cgi?t=1961NCLC%201961-1962&f=1
  5. http://www.nonleaguetables.co.uk/cgi-bin/lt.cgi?t=1961NCLL%201961-1962&f=1
  6. http://www.nonleaguetables.co.uk/cgi-bin/lt.cgi?t=1961NCOUNT%201961-1962&f=1

But...wha? The last two are the same, I think, but as for 1960-61, it's hard to tell what happened that year. Anyone have an idea of what was going on, and how North Shields ended up as champion?

http://www.rsssf.com/tablese/engnortheasthist.html suggests that 5 or 6 is right, and #2 seems likely as it mentions North Shields becoming champion...

A note at the bottom of #1 says that the league ran two separate competitions that year, one up to Christmas (#1) and the other after (#2), and then there was a play-off to determine the overall champions...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 15:28, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, but the top four of what exactly? Just the #2 results? The sum of #2 & #3? I think #1 is just a round robin for the Cup, but... - Wmcduff (talk) 16:15, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll ask the question on a forum I know which is populated by the most knowledgable people on non-league football that you are ever likely to find..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 09:33, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
