Can anyone verify the attendees? Especially Hasselhoff and Sanders?

-- At one time I was a student employee of the alumni office and in the 90's it was well known that Hasselhoff had at one time attended some type of theatre program or something along that line over a summer or summers. Sanders I was told used to attend the university in the off season. The university was only a few miles from where he lived and the Pontiac Silverdome where they played at the time. I used to live in a neighborhood adjacent to his property.

I did have more verifiable information at the time that they attended.

Art Gallery

Isn't there a website for the OU Art Gallery? Each year has a fascinating mix of exhibitions and works from a variety of artists (famous and local artists alike). (MegHC205 16:51, 7 September 2007 (UTC))

MegHC205: I was thinking on the same lines as you. There are so many artistic things in the college concerning things like music (instrumental and choral), dance, and art. It feels as though there is remarkably little about all of these artistic outlets in the article. I don't feel particularly qualified to do them all justice, but I would like to encourage some one who feels they can do justice to any of these aforementioned things to do so. Excellent wealth of information

This entry is absolutely stellar. I'm a freshman at OU this year and I learned a great deal of information from this entry. I was unaware that OU was once owned by Michigan State University. I also found the section on Alumni to be quite fascinating! I had no idea so many important and well-known people in our society graduated from OU.

This is a tad off topic, but just wondering... does anyone know why OU changed their mascot name from the Pioneers to the Grizzlies?

This is a great page! I'm happy to see the information is correct! :) Oakland changed their mascot from Pioneer Pete to the Grizz in 1998 because they became a Division I Sports team (they wanted a more fierce mascot). Jewels87 Jewels87 03:07, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Success All Around

It stirs a lot of pride to know that OU offers a wide variety of research-intensive doctorate degrees. I was also pleasantly surprised by the many different areas the alumni from Oakland University went on to be successful in. The David Hasselhoff link isn't a hoax, is it? I think that the article overall would like a lot nicer with pictures of campus, seeing as it is part of the scenic area that was once the Dodge estate.

My question is, is it known what caused Oakland to break away from being a Michigan State campus?

No the David Hasselhoff link is not a joke :) He did go here. I agree, we need some pictures of the overall campus, especially right by the dorms. Bear (or Beer) Lake is beautiful around this time of year. A picture of the Mansion would be awesome too if it isn't already up.

To try to answer your question, OU was MSUOU, and was considered the "Honors College" of MSU at the time. I believe Matilda wanted to create something local. My memory is a bit spotty on the details though. Can someone help verify parts of this?

I believe that was the main reason, however the two schools do still have some affiliation, MSU is working in collaboration with OU to create the med school here in 2010. I recall something about it being a satellite school, kind of like the law school. I don't recall if the med school will be just for the non-clinical years, does anyone know about that? I do recall talk about OU hosting a satellite campus for MSU's medical school. However, OU decided to start up its own program. This wikipedia article has a short paragraph about OU teaming up with Beaumont Hospitals to build a medical school at OU with the charter class beginning in 2010. OU's website has an article about the partnership. It will be a 4 year program. The first two years will consist of medical science classes and labs. The last two will include clinical rotations around various hospitals, however, Royal Oak and Troy Beaumont will be the main sites. Interesting Article

This article is both informative and interesting. I thought the creators did an excellent job of summarizing the history of Oakland University. I am from out of state coming to Michigan for college. This page without a doubt helped me understand where I have moved and the qualifications of this university.

The only problem I had with the page is the fact that the OU Golden Grizzlies link did not contain a wealth of knowledge about the sports teams here. As a member of a team here on campus, I would love to see more of the sports history and records.

This article is off to a good start. I think it has a lot of potential and room to grow. Specifically I would like to see more info on Cooley Law School. I am interested to find out more about the one at OU, because when I clicked on the link it only explained about the one in Lansing. Other than that I really enjoyed the brief description of Oakland University, because it presents the need-to-know facts clearly. I also thought the picture of Meadow Brook Hall was gorgeous! Who wouldn't want to go to a school that has a "castle" on campus.:)

I think that this article could benefit by keeping up with the progress that the OU medical school is making. The school has had many new developments since it has been announced, and many people (premed and others) would be very interested in this. I am also interested in hearing more about Oakland's campus and student activities. What are some big events that students like to take part in? I'm interested in living on campus at Oakland University and I was wondering what life is like for students who live on campus. I hear that most students commute and I was wondering how many actually live on campus because it wasn't mentioned in the article. I also would like to know more about their dormitory conditions and their recreation center and maybe an overview of programs it offers as well as its main features. Thanks! Great information on History and Academics

I am a current Oakland University student who was employed as an Admissions Ambassador last year. We had to learn quite a bit of information regarding Oakland's history, as well as the academic programs it offers. This article is very informative and accurate on those two points. My grandfather was an OU employee from it's charter year. He has told me stories of what it was like and how it started. Go Grizzlies

Jessica Shermetaro: I am a freshman at Oakland University this year and I found the article to be very informative. The web site does well to cordinate the important points about Oakland University that are presented to incoming students at orientations to hopefully provoke an interest in attending the university. I think the article should comment on the saftey ranking Oakland has recieved. I believe I was told at orientation that it is the third safest campus. I would have liked there to be more information in the Culture and the Arts section about past plays and attractions that have drawn more than 350,000 visitors to OU's campus each year. I need to find out what all the excitement is about and buy me some tickets to the plays offered! Oakland's campus is so beautiful and I was wondering why pictures weren't posted. I didn't recognize a lot of the names of the Alumni listed, but a quick description of their achievements and occupations gives me more confidence in Oakland's programs. My piano teacher's husband, Bryan Barnett, is the mayor of Rochester Hills and is listed in the Alumni section. I did not know he attended this university. As a athlete, it made me happy to see Oakland's athletics has its very own web page. I did notice that one statistic hasn't been updated and that was the number of students attending Oakland University. How long will it be before the number fo students is revised for 2007? MeadowBrook Music Festival & Meadow Brook Hall

In reading this entry, I was thinking about one of the things that comes to mind constantly when speaking with someone about my OU experience. That is the MeadowBrook Music Festival. I noticed that it was mentioned in the entry, but not elaborated upon or linked. The MeadowBrook's website is:

Now, of course, since I am so new at this I have no idea if that is alright thing to be adding to the entry. However, given the likes of some quite large names that have performed there, most recently Stevie Wonder and Gordon Lightfoot, it seems there could be more added to this bit of Oakland University.

Secondly, and probably more notable to more people, is the Meadow Brook Hall or Meadow Brook Mansion. I don't believe this is even mentioned in the entry. Of course, this is the previous residence of Matilda Dodge Wilson and is now utilized for various occasions, such as weddings and comparable events. Possibly, it might be a good idea to add in the link to its website as well.

Hopefully this information will get to someone who has a better knowledge than I about Wikipedia or maybe I will be deleting this entry sometime soon and adding these things myself if I can find the time.

Advertising POV tag - vandalism ?

After reading this article carefully a couple of times, I have come to the conclusion that the assertion that it is written from a non-neutral point of view / as advertising is false. The tag was added by anonymous IP in September of 2009 without discussion. Other than the use of the subjective "extensive" in a couple of places, this appears to be factual and unopinionated information. I have to question if this was partisan vandalism by a non-OU party. (FYI I am a Michigan State grad, not OU)

I would like to see some discussion of this issue and a resolution (either rewrites, or tag removal. So, to facilitate that, I am making this entry and inviting dialogue. If none appears, I will remove the "extensive"s and the tag.--Rwberndt (talk) 21:12, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Professor's strike of 2009

I've added a "Controversies" section detailing the tenured faculty strike in September of 2009. I'm not sure, but I think it's really unusual as a strike insofar as it's the professors and not, say, the teachers' aides who are striking. Artemis-Arethusa (talk) 14:03, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
