Sources and external links[edit]

I notice that there are only two in-line sources in this short article, both relating to the Old Wethersfield Historic District. Offhand it looks like this article should perhaps be moved to Old Wethersfield Historic District, which would be a better name for what is in the article now.

I removed the following two external links whose labels had the appearance of supporting the "Old Wethersfield" name for the article:

This is a link to Historic Wethersfield, not "Old Wethersfield"
This link does not currently work.

This article has been mentioned at Talk:List of RHPs in CT#Old Wethersfield Historic District, where some discussion of the merits of renaming or splitting this article might take place. doncram (talk) 00:19, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I further note that the Town of Wethersfield is obviously proud of its historic district, which it decreed in 1962. Much information about it, repeatedly referring to it as "Old Wethersfield Historic District" is available in the Town's website about it. The district is a 2.3 square mile portion of the 12+ square mile town. doncram (talk) 01:15, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The article has developed a bit now. Having browsed in the sources, it now seems to me that "Old Wethersfield Historic District" is the formal name of the historic district declared by the town in 1962 and listed on the NRHP in 1970. It appears that the "Old Weathersfield" name is a shortened form which refers to the historic district. Also "Weathersfield Village" and another variation, which seem also to refer to this. I personally think the formal name is better for the article title, with assertion in lede that this is also known as "Old Wethersfield" now. The town of Wethersfield was founded whenever it was, maybe further down by the river, not necessarily in this district. The existing alternative names given in the lede, "Watertown" and "Pyquag", which appear in the NRIS database, might be alternative names most applicable to historic Wethersfield, not to the Old Wethersfield Historic District. I'll watch for comments here, and then may make a Requested Move request in a few days. doncram (talk) 02:10, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[Edit conflict] - I don't know what you are reading, but in the sources I read, "Old Wethersfield" is the name of the oldest part of Wethersfield, founded circa 1634. It is both a a Town of Wethersfield historic district (since 1962) and a National Register historic district (since 1970), although it is likely that the boundaries of the two HDs are not precisely identical. I don't doubt you if you say that "Old Wethersfield Historic District" is the name listed on the nom form and in NRIS. However, I note that the Old Wethersfield Shopkeepers Association does not use the words "Historic District" in their organization name or the name of their website about the area, the historic tour described at this local historical society website is of "Old Wethersfield" (not the Old Wethersfield Historic District), and the Yankee magazine article I cited calls the historic district "Old Wethersfield." Leave the name as it is. --Orlady (talk) 03:17, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Orlady has 2 or 3 times added or revised a webpage named OldWeathersfield.Com, giving it label "Old Weathersfield". In the context of discussion, where O had previously taken a position that Old Weathersfield should remain the name of article, I think it suits her position and is argumentative to give it that name. Look at what the website says. Welcome to OldWeathersfield.Com. Look at the Contact Us link: it is self-described as OldWeathersfield.Com. To label it "Old Weathersfield" appears incorrect. Orlady, would you please reply and discuss here, rather than repeatedly re-presenting it that way? doncram (talk) 03:10, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orlady noted elsewhere that this NY Times article from 1993 discusses Old Wethersfield (then called the "Olde Towne Tourism District"), among other historic sites. That seems like a useful source for this article, thanks! doncram (talk) 19:05, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discrepancy[edit]

The article mentions the historic district as 2.3 sq mi and as 1300 acres. Now 2.3 sq mi is 1472 acres and 1300 acres is 2.03 sq mi. Can someone find a recent source definitively stating its acreage, or find out why there's a discrepancy?

Thanks,
