No, he's understood to be ethnic Belarusian, as it says in all his official biographies 1, 2, 3 --Czalex 08:00, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Meaningless, one can be British, French, Russian or whatever and still be Jewish! 'Official biographies' are obviously going to downplay the fact that he is Jewish. All the Jewish-Russian oligarchs try to downplay their Jewishness, as that would make them even more hated in Russia than the rest of the oligarchs already are. How do you think they made their billions - by buying up shares issued to the everyday Russian workers who, being products of the Soviet Union and having not an inkling of the basics of capitalism, sold them for as little as a bottle of Vodka, often to educated Russian Jews, who, by virtue of their far greater connections with the USA, Israel, the UK etc (countries in which many of their relatives live) did understand capitalism. It is no coincidence that Abramovich and this delightful character are such good buddies! Btw im not a nazi and am NOT saying there is a world wide zionist conspiracy. 82.36.25.12 (talk) 13:09, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bill Browder describes some of the voucher auctions in his book. Yes, everybody got a voucher and then people went around the country buying them for peanuts or a bottle of vodka from simple people who had no idea what the piece of paper they had been sent was worth. The bundles were then auctioned off in Moscow. Sometimes tires started burning in the street so bidders could not get to the auction house and on one occasion the airport was sabotaged so buyers could not fly into Moscow. So far Browder's description.

The larger sums needed in the auctions for voucher bundles, i.e. whole companies, could not have come from Russian sources because Russians in the Soviet Union could not accumulate such capital. This is especially obvious in the Khodorkovsky case - he had capital for all the oil and gas resources in Russia? Nobody has ever explained where he had that fantastic sum of money from. The most credible assumption is that this was the Bankers Trust money which is said to have vanished in Russia. He helped himself to it with the hep of the Red Army is a theory that I have heard. It is widely assumed that generally the capital to buy up the companies came from Jewish sources - but it is not proven. It is a hypothesis until proven.

This in the article was perplexing: "In February 2018 Alexei Navalny published a video about a meeting between Deripaska and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Sergei Eduardovich Prikhodko on a yacht traveling near Norway...." Where on earth did Navalny get that video from? Things like that should NOT be published without saying where the video came from and when it was made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:8003:A928:800:41C6:4C49:5985:A7DD (talk) 04:13, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Crisis[edit]

According to CNN today, he's lost $16b in the crisis due to a slump in share prices. Malick78 (talk) 16:32, 23 October 2008 (UTC) German newspapers say that at 13 Feb 2009 he does have $30 billion of debt and is in fact bankrupt. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.230.127.4 (talk) 15:53, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good to hear. Criminals belong in jail not on luxury yachts. There must be more info somewhere about his activities in the Yeltsin era, which would make for a far more interesting article than the white-ish wash presented here, as there is no way an individual goes from being skint to owning 20-30% of a huge Aluminium plant in the space of one year without either connections or some criminal activities. Also, it would be interesting to know when he married Polina Yumachev. Anyone? 82.36.25.12 (talk) 13:31, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lawsuits[edit]

It's slightly concerning to see that an editor (whose sole contribution to Wikipedia is repeated editing of this article) deleted, without comment, a paragraph which gave an accurate account of the July 2008 stage of the Cherney v Deripaska litigation and replaced it, without comment, by an earlier edition which (a) was demonstrably inaccurate in its description of the remedies sought (and even in minor points such as its failure to recognise that there is no "British High Court") and (b) gives the reader no idea of what, in the following paragraph, the spokesman for Deripaska was criticising or complaining about. I don't wish to suggest that this section is incapable of improvement, but 'improvement' is to be distinguished from PR. Please note that the substance of the paragraph in question, now again replaced, is taken from the decision itself, and FWIW is protected from any claim for defamation because it is protected by absolute privilege. ariwara (talk) 19:58, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I note that, again without comment or justification being offered, an editor whose sole concern in Wikipedia is to excise comment in this article which might be regarded as not pro the subject has deleted the account of the decision in the High Court in London and substituted his own misleading account. As it seems predictable that any accurate account will again be deleted, may I point readers to the actual decision of the Court. On a couple of minor points, (i) it is not the "British High Court"; there are separate superior court systems for England & Wales and for Scotland and this was in the English High Court; and (ii) it's "Mr Justice X" not "judge X. ariwara (talk) 09:40, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lawsuits and repeated reversions[edit]

This section has been reverted to a misleading version for the fourth time, with no justification or comment being offered. Just to keep them on the record, these are the two competing versions at present:

(1) Ariwara:"On July 3, 2008, in the English High Court, Mr Justice Christopher Clarke held in a lengthy opinion that Cherney had the right to seek in the English courts declarations against Deripaska to give effect to Cherney's trust claims, an order that Deripaska sell or procure the sale of 20% of Rusal and 13.2% of UCR and account to him for the proceeds, and damages (a total claim value of about $4.35 billion). He rejected an argument that the English court was not a proper venue for these claims, holding that in the Russian courts (where Deripaska said any such claims should be heard) "it appears to be common ground between the experts that, in certain cases, the arbitrazh courts cannot necessarily be expected to perform their task fairly and impartially. [Deripaska's expert witness] characterizes that as only applicable in a case whose outcome will affect the direct and material strategic interest of the Russian state..." (paragraph 239) and that "Mr Deripaska has held himself out as having a link with the Russian State that borders on the umbilical" in reaching a decision that there was a "significant risk of improper government interference if Mr Cherney were to bring the present claims in Russia, where they would be very high profile proceedings indeed, such that substantial justice may not be done to him if he is required to proceed there" (paragraph 248). Accordingly, he held, the English court was not forum non conveniens. The court's decision was published by BAILII." followed by "the court granted Deripaska leave to appeal".

(2) Nightmute: "On July 3, 2008, British High Court Judge Christopher Clarke ruled that the case can be tried in England despite his own conclusion that "the natural forum for this litigation is Russia"." followed by "Judge Christopher Clarke granted leave to appeal to Deripaska".

Now, clearly there are differences of substance here, and it will be noted that while the first is fully referenced with an impeccable citation the second wrenches a short quotation (from paragraph 254 of the judgment) out of its context. The interest of the decision, for the purposes of this article, is not the 'first stage' test of a forum non conveniens argument (what is the natural forum)but the second stage (reasons why, on the facts, the natural forum should not be deferred to). We may also note the casual indications that the author of the second version does not understand the issue: such as the reference to the "British High Court", when this was a case in the High Court of England & Wales (and yes, there is a difference between English and British) and the repeated reference to "Judge Christopher Clarke" as if he sat in the district court. There are further problems, such as the use of a dead link for Deripaska's criticisms of the judgment (which do not indeed make sense unless the judgment itself is quoted).

While the first version could be improved, and suggestions are welcomed, there seems little point so long as it is repeatedly deleted to be substituted by PR-speak. ariwara (talk) 10:24, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

3) The changes constantly added by Ariwara represent Cherney's biased position on the judgement, taken out of context, which is being disputed in the court of appeal. It's possible to publish the whole transcript of the judgement here but it's not a page about the case, it's a page about the Russian businessman and his career. If the idea is to add as much information about the case as possible, we would need to add Cherney's background (using Clark's remarks) to show who the claimant really is. This may require respective changes of Cherney's page. Nightmute (talk) 13:02, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

alleged ties to organized crime[edit]

The United States revoked an entry visa of Deripaska. The Wall Street Journal tied the entry ban to what it called concerns that Deripaska may have ties to organized crime in Russia, citing U.S. law enforcement officials.[1] The Wall Street Journal states that the F.B.I. allowed Deripaska to visit the U.S. in 2009 only after having come to a secret agreement that is believed to be that Deripaska must cooperate with the F.B.I. giving the agency information on organized crime in Russia and stating the details of his visits in return to having limited access to the U.S.[2]

Deripaska is an oligarch[edit]

Every time I revisit this article I see someone has removed the reference to him being an oligarch and changed it to "businessman." Oligarch is much more accurate and is the term used to describe him by reliable sources. The term is not defamatory. Considering the "close contributor" template added to an article on a high-profile subject, I think it's important we get this resolved and reconsider whether a contributor to this page should be given additional scrutiny. МандичкаYO 😜 20:53, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have made Russian oligarch an internal link, it seems fitting to give information about that in the ingress as the way ownership of state assets were transferred to a small number of persons is rather unique to that time in Russia. Ulflarsen (talk) 17:16, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; the popup description of "oligarch" fits him to a tee. BMJ-pdx (talk) 14:34, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just replaced three instances of "the businessman" with "Deripaska". That's completely neutral, whereas in their context, "the businessman" reeked of whitewash. BMJ-pdx (talk) 14:03, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fun fact: The 21:44 (UTC), 2 September 2018 version introduces Deripaska as a "Russian businessman and philanthropist". Whereas the word "oligarch" appears thirteen times in the References (contrast that with the version's Edit summary). BMJ-pdx (talk) 14:34, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Norilsk[edit]

This is a man that profits off the death and diseases he inflicts on thousands of Russians living in the city of Norils. Section: Assisted FBI with Rescue of Levinson[edit]

According to former FBI agent Robyn Gritz cited in this section, "At the last minute, Secretary Clinton decided not to make the agreed-on statement." However the article Disappearance of Robert Levinson says nothing about Clinton's decision to prevent what Gritz claims would have otherwise been the successful return of Levinson. In fact it says that Clinton's successor had no luck in trying to get Levinson back from Iran.

This seems like a very important aspect of Levinson's disappearance.

"Russian-Jew"[edit]

Moving this conversation from User:Nomoskedasticity's talk. @Sungodtemple: You gave Haaretz as the source of Deripaska being of Jewish heritage[3]. Are there further reliable sources confirming his ethnic background? We're at WP are usually quite wary of publishing ethnicities of living people unless well sourced, but naturally if more sources confirm it, such information does have its place in an encyclopaedia. — kashmīrī TALK 16:15, 14 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification needed: "Deripaska's request" = willingness?[edit]

I added a "Clarification needed" note to "Deripaska's request" in the "Paul Manafort" section. Does it refer to his willingness to testify before Congress? That seems like the only possibility, but it should be more specific. (BTW, I had to undo my first attempt, due to a mousographical error that submitted the change before I was done.) Extended-confirmed-protected edit request to include leading role of funding Redut PMC[edit]

Please include the following paragraph in the "Career" section, it describes the private military company Redut (company), which is deployed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and heavily funded by Deripaska.

Redut PMC[edit]

Redut, also known as Redoubt or Redut-Antiterror and formerly known as "Shield",[1][2] is a Russian Private Military and Security Company (PMSC) that is part of the "Antiterror-family". Redut consists of similarly named PMSCs which protect commercial operations of Russian companies.[3] Redut is currently deployed by Russia in the Russian invasion of Ukraine,[4][5][6][7] for which it was sanctioned.[8] Several fighters of the group have been convicted of war crimes during the invasion.[6]

Oleg Deripaska and Gennady Timchenko reportedly are major backers of the company. The PMC received armored personnel carriers, helmets, and protective vests from them.[9][10] Zerbrxsler (talk) 14:41, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
