plothole?[edit]

Who was the first Damon Bradley, calling her from the airport leaving for venice? He said on the phone, he´s a friend of Dwanyne - but the name was made up by Larry, so was he a "real" Damon Bradley and a real destiny? Implausible that he was identical with the "real" Damon Bradley at the airport at the end of the movie, because he would recognise her name and that she was the to-be-wife of his friend. It cannot be Robert Downey Jr., because he falls in love with her later in italy when he sees her (and it would not be logical, that he lure her to italy when he already met her in den US and fell in love with her there). Implausible that Larry made also this prank, because later he did not know about the whole italy-thing. No plothole. The script clearly intends us to understand that the man on the phone is the real Damon Bradley. Why else would he turn up in Italy later? It's hardly implausible that Bradley would forget a woman whom he spoke to for a minute on the phone, as he was about to catch a plane, and whose only connection for him then was that he asked her to take a message. Agreed. Larry didn't "make up" the name Damon Bradley, but knew him from little league & says that "he was a real jerk" - making Faith think such a boy was “her destiny” added to the razzing of his little sister. Assuming Dwayne (who is a jerk) also grew-up in Pittsburgh, it’s no surprise he & Damon are friends. D-Square26 (talk) 16:18, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Their plane then flies into the sun[edit]

It really does sound odd, you need to read it out loud to fully appreciate how strange it is. WP:FILMPLOT requires brevity and pointing out that airplane flew away is fair obvious, it's what they do, and it is not an essential plot detail. Removed it. Twist at end lends film an under-appreciated depth[edit]

There's a wonderful correspondence between an early part of the film, when Faith & Peter act out a scene between Hepburn & Peck from “Roman Holiday” by placing their hands into the Boca de la Vita (the "Mouth of Truth" where lovers must truly confess their love - or sacrifice their appendages) and the scene at the airport where Faith & Peter finally catch-up with Damon Bradley.

Employing an actor bearing no small resemblance to the ancient landmark, the film cleverly juxtaposes the ancient symbol of "destiny" with the presence & inevitable unmasking of the film's MacGuffin. Before this "Boca de la Vita" made incarnate, Peter confesses his love for Faith, who hesitates until the MacGuffin / oracle demands "Do You Love Him?!" When she realizes that she does, the MacGuffin & a seemingly minor early scene are satisfyingly intertwined.

That all this takes place against the roar of ascending aircraft adds a modern twist to the ancient-made-contemporary mythic presentation. One is almost left feeling that the "Boca de la Vita" planned the whole thing...or at least took note of the cynical brother's deception of his true-hearted sibling, & decided to make things right. Even the brother was forced to re-consider & re-enchant his love for his faithful spouse Hope. Regarded merely a light-hearted romp, this cleverly written resolution lends "Only You" an unexpected depth.
