The original signage has since changed twice in less than as many years. (2004 photo) These now indicate 137 - Hill Island, Ontario and the I-81 directional indicator has moved to other, less prominent signs

The changes in the Highway 401 signage for this are odd - the signs originally indicated "Interstate 81, Hill Island, Bridge to USA" - these signs were replaced with "Interstate 81, Hill Island USA" then a few months later were taken down and replaced with "Highway 137, Hill Island, Ontario" and a second set of signs 1km back saying "Interstate 81 USA follow 137". An extra (smaller) "I-81" directional marker was added on the offramp. It looks like someone made one big mistake and had to make some corrections; it's not the place of individual provinces to cede British Commonwealth territory (even if it's only Hill Island) to the USA or any other foreign power.

I never saw this version - undoubtedly "Hill Island" and "USA" were intended to be separate destinations, but the sign didn't "read" properly, hence the quick change. The highway should have been renumbered as ON-81 though when the decision was made to finally sign its route number. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.207.214.134 (talk • contribs)

Apparently, some time last year they replaced the signs to Hwy 137 *again*. Now, at least one big green overhead sign in each direction on Hwy 401 approaching Exit 661 says:

"137 Hill Island, Ontario / I-81 Bridge to USA"

(The shields are included for both Ontario Hwy 137 and I-81.) I saw the new signs on my way from Toronto to Ottawa on Friday, July 31, 2009. Seems like they've finally got it right. Set theorist (talk) 08:16, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here's the response from the MTO:

This is in response to your request to identify Highway 137 as Highway 81 in order to coincide with the interstate numbering system in the United States.

The Ministry has an extensive highway numbering system in Ontario. The numbering system was set up to be sequential beginning in Western Ontario and extending easterly. Our challenge has always been dealing with numbering inconsistencies within the province itself, due in part to highway transfers, amalgamation, bypasses and new construction. Our provincial numbering system is also reviewed in conjunction with municipality numbering systems and requires all parties to come to an agreement on any selected number.

Since this highway numbering system has been in place for many years and is part of a province wide system, Highway 137 is the historically accepted number by both the Ministry and the neighbouring municipalities for the highway in question. Therefore we are unable to support a change to the existing highway number in order to compliment the interstate highway network.

I don't think this "system" has ever been in place. Highway 1-20 are trunk routes, 30s in central east, 40s all over the place, 50s in Niagara/Hamilton, 60s near North Bay, etc. Seems like the response was "Thats a good idea, but historically it has always been this so we can't change things" - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ ^τ _¢ 14:21, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly "neighbouring municipalities" (plural) is a falsehood. There is only one Canadian municipality (Township of Leeds & Thousand Islands) on this road. --66.102.83.61 (talk) 15:43, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
