History Tie-In Question[edit]

Is there any reason why this film's article shouldn't reference the actual boat-- USS Growler-- that seems to have inspired it? The CO's action, as depicted by Ward Bond, is the only instance of its kind in the history of the US Navy. Drieux 07:53, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What was the actual name of the Boat that Operation Pacific was made on?[edit]

What was the name of the US Submarine that this movie was filmed on. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.158.165.69 (talk) 16:25, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno, but I can watch it again and look for clues. Sometimes I've seen the hull number painted over for a movie but can still be determined because of slight variations in color/gloss.

Trivia: The brass builder's plaque shows the Thunderfish hull number to be SS-502 and built in April 1944. Nice touch. SS-502 was never built. The contract was cancelled in 1944. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dbryant 94560 (talkcontribs) 20:31, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Patricia Neal's Lung Cancer[edit]

Under Production, the article states: "John Wayne and Patricia Neal did not get along during filming. Nearly fourteen years later, however, they worked together on In Harm's Way (1965) where she noted that he had mellowed a lot, possibly because he was seriously ill with lung cancer at the time."

I believe this is incorrect. Ms Neal suffered from a series of cerebral aneurysms at that time. She died from lung cancer in 2010. This is clearly and I believe accurately stated in the Wikipedia article Patricia Neal. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.80.115.55 (talk) 02:34, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Wiki article is correct as written; your reading comprehension is flawed. John Wayne had lung cancer and it says as much. "because HE was seriously ill" — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dbryant 94560 (talkcontribs) 20:34, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Swede Momsen[edit]

It would be worth noting that the script was loosely based on the career of Swede Momsen who sorted out the problem with torpedo detonators, though not in the manner used in the movie. Swede's approach was far more colourful as you can see in the biography entry for him.

The script also referred to Wayne's work with undersea rescue, which was another of Momsen's accomplishments with the Squalus.
