Date created[edit]

I am not sure the best way to go about this, so I am adding the information here. The award was created before 1965 (at least as early as 1964), because my grandfather received it in September 1964. Here's a photo of his award (which I hereby release under CC-BY-SA, *if* that is allowed -- not sure since it is a photo of a thing to which don't hold the copyright, although I, Gina Likins, did take the picture).

recipients list[edit]

In order to keep the recipients list from getting too long, I propose limiting the list to persons who have an established Wikipedia article. I can think of no better criteria for inclusion/exclusion. After all, there are over 6,000 recipients of this award. What is to stop users from adding recipients ad infinitum if we don't define criteria? ++Arx Fortis (talk) 21:50, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. That's perfect criteria for this. 138.180.194.2 (talk) 10:27, 23 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Having an "established Wikipedia article" is an arbitrary criteria for an award that is by definition given to people of local (to NC) significance. Just to drive home the point - the Bob Timberlake linked to the article is an obscure football player of no significance in NC, while Bob Timberlake the painter, furniture designer and actual recipient of the award doesn't currently have a Wikipedia entry, but is a HUGE deal in North Carolina. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.193.69.12 (talk) 20:52, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, after completing the daunting task of the web site, there were recipients listed on wiki that were not actually recipients. ( I also intend to add the insignia for this award at a later time.) This has been a very time consuming task but well worth recognizing those individuals who have received this award. Please forgive and correct my syntax - I just want to get it right. Thanks, Susan Buchanan Woodson

Subject: Wikipedia Long Leaf Pine
Allison,
I am hopeful that the website for The Long Leaf Pine Society will launch this week or next. In anticipation of this and in an effort to provide the most complete and current information about The Order of the Long Leaf Pine on-line, I would like to revise the Wikipedia entry regarding this awards program. Although anyone is free to revise a Wikipedia entry, I do not want to prodeed without first getting your comments.
Attachment #1 is my proposed re-write. Attachment #2 is the current Wikipedia entry. My re-write differs from the current version in that it:
1. Updates the number of award recipients (based upon my most recent count).
2. Sets forth a brief description of the origin of the award program.
3. Adds to the list of "Notable recipients" Dale Earnhardt, Alexander Julian and Richard Petty; and deletes Joseph M. Bryan, William A. Griffin and Charles Kuralt whom
I could not find on my list. Although I did not delete any other names, do you know of any particular reason why the list contains the names of some persons not
generally well-known especially outside the state (e.g., Jack Betts, George BonDurant, Dan Blue, Janice Cole, Bonnie Ethel Cone, Lloyd Hackley, I. Beverly Lake,
Jr., Carmen Hooker Odom, Patricia Timmons-Goodson), and not the names of more nationally recognized North Carolinians?
4. Adds a brief description of The Long Leaf Pine Society and its connection to The Order of the Long Leaf PIne.
5. Adds, if possible, an image of The Order of the Long Leaf Pine - Society insignia.
Because of the rather complex technical criteria which must be satisfied to edit a Wikipedia entry, I likely will be unable to effect the changes without some outside assistance. Before pursuing this further, I want your feedback which hopefully will not add too much to your already heavy workload.

I reverted the edit that broke a lot of formatting and wikilinking. It appears that it may have just been copy-pasted from Word into the article space. You can't really do that as formatting will be way off a lot of times. As to the above letter, honestly, it is not really relevant what the Governor's office says or what Mr. Fisher states. Editors here have posted people as recipients that that reliable sources have stated that they have received the award (and also are notable, which means they have their own Wikipedia articles). Adding info or suggesting another format for some info is acceptable, but wholesale rewriting taking out references, wikilinking and other info is not. There is not any complex technical criteria to satisfy Wikipedia. Just have to learn a little bit of how to follow the Manual of Style. You can't simply use this wikipedia article as just another webpage for the organization or award. Thank you. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 20:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As far as the names in the list, those that are uncited should be taken out. Taking names out that actually are cited simply because they aren't well known outside of the state is inappropriate. They have Wikipedia articles and are notable. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 20:44, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure we are missing a lot of names that could be on the list. Absolutely feel free to add those with citations. Thank you. -- JoannaSerah (talk) 21:05, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
