Image copyright problem with File:Bowerman4-1-.jpg[edit]

The image File:Bowerman4-1-.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

General impressions[edit]

Cluskillz (talk · contribs) asked me for some feedback on this article. I just gave it a quick read, and have the following observations; I will try to return with a more thorough review when time permits.

  • The article appears very thorough, well researched and well written. I am not intimately familiar with the subject, but know enough to say there are no obvious omissions; and it seems that even less-documented periods in the program's history have been researched and adequately covered. Well done. I think this could make a good Featured Article candidate with just a bit more work.
  • The only exception to the above is that I suspect there may be a bit more to tell of the relationship with Nike. I could be wrong, but it seems that there is such an extensive history between the organizations that there is probably a bit more to tell here. I don't think this is enough to prevent Good Article status, but should probably be carefully considered before an FA run.
  • The non-free image of Bowerman, noted by the bot above, should undoubtedly be removed. It would be nice if there were a fair use image of Bowerman, but in its absence, I don't think it's critical that he be illustrated in this article.
  • At least one image (the 1905 track team) is stored on Wikipedia, even though it's a Public Domain image. This should be moved to Wikimedia Commons. In general, only the occasional non-free image should be directly uploaded to Wikipedia.

As I said, this is all based on a very quick skim; so I will try to read it more thoroughly soon. But I think the article is ready to be proposed at GA now -- in my opinion, any issues preventing its promotion there should be pretty minor, and readily addressed by the time it's reviewed. Good work! -Pete (talk) 00:03, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just one other thought that doesn't necessarily directly impact this article: it might be nice to create an "Oregon Ducks track and field coaches" template along the lines of the Template:Oregon Ducks football coach navbox template. I don't think anyone has created one for a college track and field team yet, but I think Oregon is the perfect place to start. A table of coaches and their length of service in this article wouldn't be a bad idea either. I was interested in a quick overview of that information and it wasn't super-easy to figure out. That's all I have to add, great work! --Esprqii (talk) 00:55, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for both of your comments. I've deleted the Bowerman image, but not sure how to move images to Commons. Also not sure how to make navboxes, but I did a little experimenting with a coaches section. How do you think that looks? The table looks a bit...wimpy...but not sure what other columns to add. A lot of other sports like football will have WLTs and %'s but I don't think track and field is that simple. Also, what do you think about the interim coaches? Are they better left out of the table or better included? Cluskillz (talk) 23:41, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's a bit tricky to move an image from WP to Commons once it's already been uploaded. I'll look up the tool that assists with that, but I brought it up mainly for your future uploads. I do like the table you mocked up in your sandbox, and I don't think it would help to add all the interim coaches. I'd suggest specifying a threshold, e.g., "the following table shows all coaches who served at least two years." -Pete (talk) 16:29, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I also think this is a great article and I wish it luck in its GA review. For transferring an image to Commons, the tool (CommonsHelper), requires a TUSC account, I believe. What I've done in the past is upload the same image to Commons under the same filename with an identical description and then tag the Wikipedia version for speedy deletion with {{db-f8}}.
