I swear it is bigger then that. Does this include Limpsfeild? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.74.212.42 (talk) 15:58, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great Train Robber[edit]

I haven't been able to find any evidence that any of the great train robbers went to Oxted School. As a lifelong resident of Oxted and a former student of the school I think I would have heard this sooner. please correct me if I'm wrong with legitimate evidence.

I always thought that this was the case.(The great train robbers went to Oxted school...at least one of them did) I attended Oxted County School from 1988 until when i left in 1992. I remember the headmaster at the time... Mr Roger Coles telling the pupils one morning in assembly about it. I don't have any legitimate evidence, but still i've always remembered him saying it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.86.254.117 (talk) 13:35, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The previous head teacher Mrs Hawley also mentioned this at the prize-giving in 2005: One of the great train robbers attended the school. 89.240.228.222 (talk) 13:22, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The country is missing[edit]

In the first lines, the name of the country ( UK ) is missing. 83.124.53.227 16:52, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nonebrity Residents[edit]

If we must mention non/sleb entities living in Oxted perhaps Henry Cooper deserves a mention ahead of trashy reality TV types? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.15.243.41 (talk) 18:01, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Location of Church[edit]

I'm baffled as to why it is considered "curious" that the church is located a mere 700 metres away from the Old Oxted High Street! This is quite common and I could list half a dozen towns in Surrey/Sussex just off the top of my head where the same situation applies. Clearly it is built on a mound which pre-dates Christianity and suggests that it was a religious site in the pre-Christian days. Such locations were often chosen as sites for churches. Furthermore the church is half-way between the manor house (Barrow Green) and the Old Oxted high street. The sentence "Curiously, Oxted church (St.Mary's) was built some distance to the north from the original settlement of Oxted" - is also lifted straight out of the Oxted history booklet that was produced just before the millennium, but please let's have a bit more rigour in Wikipedia! 89.240.228.222 (talk) 13:22, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is a blatant attempt to get people to walk past the shopping area. Which of course proves a difficulty as similar works write elsewhere for some urbanites.- Adam37 Talk 12:04, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oxted church actually predates Old Oxted by several centuries. The church is of course mentioned in Domesday of 1086, yet Old Oxted was founded in the mid 13th century. By then the church was already quite old indeed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hengistboy (talkcontribs) 04:24, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Research on the subject is most welcome but please provide sources. We cannot keep unverified text.Charles (talk) 08:56, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pubs[edit]

Maybe something could be added about the reasoning behind the lack of pubs in Oxted. As far as I am aware there is a local by-law preventing public houses being opened in Oxted, hence why Old Oxted has 4. Wetherspoon's got round it by building the pub on former British Rail land which was exempt from the by-law. BigTurnip (talk) 01:14, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has to do with the former "lord of the manor" of the Hoskins-Master family owning the Hoskins Inn. In order to secure lack of competition he ensured that a regulation was enacted (on passing land to the town) that meant that no other pub could open in (new) Oxted. Of course that pub is now a block of flats opposite the cenotaph corner of Master Park, and the regulation no longer applies. I'm not sure when it lapsed or when Wetherspoons opened so I can't comment on their building a pub on British Rail land in order to gain exemption from the by-law. 78.151.98.240 (talk) 09:44, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
