Palmetto[edit]

Just wondering why it is named "Palmetto"? I could be wrong but it seems to be just a bit too far north to be named for having a preponderance of palm trees (palmettos). What's the deal on the name? Are there palmettos there? Just curious. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.133.42.16 (talk) 07:54, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

From the City Website:

The name is said to have been conferred upon this community by a company of South Carolina soldiers enroute to the Mexican War. They said the community reminded them of their state, the “Palmetto State”. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.145.203.125 (talk) 03:21, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
