recent edits, regrading, a request[edit]

To the editors who have been recently adding to this article, thank you for your efforts. Unfortunately, much of it has been reverted due to it being out of the guidelines for school articles referenced above. I also removed the recently uploaded to Wikipedia commons image of a logo, as it will be deleted from commons shortly. Commons will not host what is known as "fair-use" copyrighted images, which is what that is. If you would want to upload it to en.Wikipedia, as a fair use logo, the wizard at Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard makes the process fairly simple. however, due to the copyright laws, the ONLY place it can be used is where the photo is in the infobox. That's a great photo, BTW. And that isn't a problem as the photo can be placed elsewhere. If you would like help with the image, feel free to contact me at my talk page. The rationale for the copyright exception is kinda tricky. John from Idegon (talk) 04:23, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Marching band section[edit]

Can I ask that you please replace the first paragraph in the marching band section, I did not touch that paragraph and it existed before I did anything.

The external link I added is indeed the band's website, maintained by it's director.

Could I have some constructive criticism on the second paragraph, what to change to make it acceptable to add, because the information is relevant. Thanks Rkoenck Rkoenck (talk) 15:48, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a link farm per school article guidelines and WP:EL. I removed the entire section specifically because it isn't relevant. Your edits show a fundamental misunderstanding of what an encyclopedia is. This article is neither of, for or by the school. An encyclopedia summarizes what others have written about a subject in reliable independent sources. If you want to publicize the band, add it to the band's webpage. I am still confused about what is wrong about the pre-existent 1st paragraph, it seemed to follow all the guidelines and provide legitimate information. Rkoenck (talk) 17:03, 4 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Let's look:

The Park Center Marching Band is under the direction of Wade Schroeder from 2009–present (previously John Olson) and the band performs at a high level year-to-year. They were awarded Grand Champion at the Vikingland Band Festival (Street-Marching State Championship[1]), in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2011, and 2012.[2].

First, per guidelines we do not use staff names. "High level" is a meaningless phrase that serves only to promote (WP:PUFFERY). Nowhere in either of the sources is that contest referred to as a state level contest, and outside of the results they post neither source could really be considered reliable sources. There is nothing there that is encyclopedic. Fundamentally, unless you can show that this stuff is covered in reliable sources that someone other than a person interested in band would read, it doesn't belong. Again, this is not the place to disseminate information the school, the staff at the school or the students of the school think is important. You must show that the world at large (and outside of your local community) would have interest in it. You do this by providing reliable sources that illustrate that.
