Ordinance or not?[edit]

Is a patriarchal blessing really an ordinace? I guess since you need a reccomend the title may fit, but I still am not sure if that is the best word.- John Pack Lambert —Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnpacklambert (talkcontribs) 19:17, 26 April 2007

I'm pretty sure you don't need a recommend, because youth can recieve them. Maddiekate 01:41, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, yes, you do have to have a recommend from your bishop. This is a recommend like a temple recommend, but is specifically for patriarchal blessings. And yes, it is an ordinance. Any priesthood blessing is considered an ordinance. -Visorstuff 00:52, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you do need a recommed and the recommend expires six months after you receive it. It is a very detailed recommend. I get one in 2 weeks and I am excited.Emeraldstone (talk) 03:26, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While there are many cases with parents having separate lineage from children and vice versa, it is because the tribes were so interelated that when you are given your lineage you are only told your dominant tribe lineage. Everybody has a little of everything in them.Emeraldstone (talk) 01:11, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recording of Father's Blessings[edit]

Page currently says, "...every Latter-day Saint father that holds the Melchizedek Priesthood can pronounce blessings upon one of his children or his spouse as necessary...The Church encourages families to create their own records of these blessings...." but doesn't reference it. I'd like to see a reference for this (I'm not questioning giving the blessing, just the recording portion of the sentence). CsikosLo (talk) 15:40, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know and can find online, the Church does not encourage this anywhere at all: it simply says there is no problem with it. All the relevant sources I can find (I provided 4 but there are more) say things along the lines of this: "A family may record a father's blessing" (emphasis added).[1][2][3][4] (At the time of writing, the Church's main website were down, so relevant information from Church-owned websites were observed from the summary provided by Google.) The "encourage[d] to record" bit appears to be wholly incorrect and should be removed. Indeed, the word "may," which is simply acknowledging a thing as permissible in this context, stands in opposition to the claim that recording father's blessings is encouraged. Community of Christ - not relevant to this article[edit]

I'm not sure why this article mentions "The Community of Christ"? They broke off from the Mormon Church years ago. It doesn't make sense to include a bit about them, and more specifically to say that they are part of the "Mormon movement". Anyone who doesn't know anything (or very little) about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints could easily be misled into thinking that modern Mormons ordain women to be priests or that the Community of Christ is also LDS. 96.51.149.15 (talk) 04:48, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Patriarchal blessings are a relevant topic for all those associated with what has come to be called the "Latter Day Saint movement," and this includes any and all congregations who trace their origins back to Joseph Smith, including the LDS Church and the Community of Christ. This article does not mention a "Mormon movement" as "Mormons" are typically understood to be those of the LDS Church. It does make mention of the "Latter Day Saint movement" of which both the LDS Church and the Community of Christ are a part. And since both have the concept of "patriarchal blessings," different terminology though they may use, this article can and should rightfully include all churches in the Latter Day Saint movement that espouse the doctrine and practice of patriarchal blessings, including the LDS Church and the Community of Christ. The individual pages for these separate but similar religions make clear the differences in doctrine and practice that exist. But some doctrines and practices are similar enough that one page for both religions is more helpful than two separate but similar pages. Does that make sense? Another point needs to be made. Your argument would be taken more seriously and your edits hold greater significance and weight if you were to obtain a valid user account rather than editing simply from an IP address. My suggestion to you is that you create a user account ASAP and begin contributing constructively to Wikipedia ASAP. Hope this information is helpful to you. --Jgstokes (talk) 05:51, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Evangelist Blessing in Community of Christ[edit]

The section concerning the evangelist blessing in the Community of Christ (CofC) has been expanded, explaining that it is a sacrament in the CofC, That it can be given to members and non-members, that it is not only for individuals, and that an evangelist blessing can be received more than once. Some of the information that was here before was either partial or false. MichaelBotts (talk) 15:07, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Common Practices between LDS and Community of Christ[edit]

Keeping in accordance with the advice of Jgstokes in Talk "Community of Christ - not relevant to this artice": "And since both [LDS and Community of Christ] have the concept of "patriarchal blessings," different terminology though they may use, this article can and should rightfully include all churches in the Latter Day Saint movement that espouse the doctrine and practice of patriarchal blessings, including the LDS Church and the Community of Christ.", it makes sense that there is only one article for this subject and not two, one for each church.

For this reason the lines in the lede have been edited to include only the common practices in both churches. The differences between the practices of the two churches for the blessing omitted in the intro are explained in the according sections of the article.

The only difference omitted from the lede that is not in the repective sections deals with the blessing being an ordinance in the LDS church. This has been restated in the LDS section. (The blessing being a sacrament in the Community of Christ is already listed in that section.) MichaelBotts (talk) 20:39, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
