Death[edit]

I am finding nothing on this, aside from the fact that twitter went absolutely nuts about it. I am currently monitoring Le Monde, Le Parisien, and Google News, and I am not seeing *anything* about this. I am pretty sure it is a hoax, but cannot find anything in either direction. Until there is a confirmation, and you can link to news coverage, please do not a date of death. More hoax confirmation here: http://ph.omg.yahoo.com/news/dont-believe-twitter-rumors-french-chef-paul-bocuse-110602928.html - please note that it actually mentions that Wikipedia was listing his death. Folks, this is why we do not change things like this without confirmation from actual news sources...Wikipedia now looks like it contributed to the rumours and speculation, even though I changed it back repeatedly last night. With much of the article still being in past tense, it still reads as if Bocuse has passed, even without a death date. 'he WAS famous...' 'he WAS one of the most prominent chefs...' French proper nouns beginning with L[edit]

He also operated a chain of brasseries in Lyon, named Le Nord, l'Est, Le Sud and l'Ouest,

Is it not:

L'est, or L'Est

I found both on the Internet, the placards on the rezzies say, e.g. LE NORD.

You're right; it's inconsistent to write l'Est and l'Auberge but not le Nord (none of these cases is found at the beginning of a sentence) and instead Le Nord, so I don't think there's a rule that French proper nouns beginning with articles should be uncapitalised (at least in an English language context), and I cannot think of a reason why l' should be treated any differently from le.
