Why only really modern references?[edit]

Paul Daniels is a major figure in magic in the UK. However his career peak was in the 1980s and early 1990s, although very much alive and active. Why does the article have no references from this time in its sources? I have added some magic books of his here. As this is what he is famous for, nt his politics, family life etcetera, more focus on this profession would be good. There is nothing in the article about his articles nor interviews with professional magazines like Genii - the Conjoror's magazine, and there are no links to the tricks he has made. Surely these shoudl be there. Perhaps someone who actually works in magic can add these? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.23.196.26 (talk) 17:50, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Important[edit]

I was thinking of adding this to his page; "He is generally considered a heel".

Important addendum: During the mid 1970's to early 1980's Paul Daniels marketed the, "TV Magic" line of products. This included simple decks of magic cards and elaborate kits containing many tricks. These kits cotained a record, and latter a cassette tape, that contained instruction recorded on them. "TV Magic" was mass marketed along side Ginsu Knives and the, "Super Bass-o-Matic '76", never the less the kits contained magic which was enjoyable to perform such as paddle tricks, and balloon penetrations.

Should there be a section for the tricks that he's particularly noted for? Eg Chop Cup, Electric Chairs etc. The publications list skips many of his publications: the list above should be extended I think. Bittersweetfish (talk) 11:06, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why has this been removed?[edit]

*At the end of his interview on ITV's The Mint he did a dirty trick to his interviewer, Kat Shoob by offering his cheek for a friendly kiss and turned at the last minute, kissing her on the mouth. She later described this as her worst ever experience in a magazine interview with Maxim.

It was the last thing he has done on TV.

Yes. This appears to be true, according to the interview she did with Maxim. It means that he carried out what amounts to a sexual assault (albeit a 'minor' one). Why has it been removed? Labcoat (talk) 12:57, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because Paul Daniels himself edits this article, and obviously doesn;t want it on ehre as i tmakes him look like a right sex pest! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.241.176.147 (talk) 10:40, 20 April 2012 (UTC) --- sounds possible, but not proven. If he does, perhaps he'd like to volunteer a CC photograph of himself in the profile. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bittersweetfish (talkcontribs) 11:10, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Questionable quote[edit]

I've removed this...

In the same year, he threatened to leave the UK if New Labour were elected, a threat he did not carry out. However he defends this as a misquote on his own website.

...as there's no source for the original "threat", only for Daniels' defence of it as a misquote: "This was a creation of a north east journalist who 'edited' the answer to his own question." Tuffian 19:57, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Daniels said it out loud on a early Channel Five show which went around his house (a sort of proto 'Cribs') He stated that he would leave the UK were Labour to be elected that May. When asked where he would go he boasted of being about to get a huge contract in Las Vegas. Djarra 12:01, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I also recall hearing him admit he said it and then slightly "back pedalling" by explaining that the original remark was meant to be a qualified statement. Before the election he was concerned about the old-style Labour Party but because "New Labour" turned out to be rather different he didn't feel his threat applied. Problem is I can't remember exactly which show that was on. We really need a clear and specific citation if this is to be included. Circusandmagicfan 13:19, 3 April 2007 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]
He stated this during an episode of Have I Got News for You that he guested on 128.243.220.22 (talk) 11:29, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Racism[edit]

Why doesn´t this article many any reference whatsoever to Daniels´lifelong obsession with making crap ethnic stereotypes, throughout his equally crap career, hosting crap gameshows? It's the main reason he's been booted off the TV.

The articles seems to have been written by people who actually admire him. Hence the deletion of anything remotely negative.

Anything negative must be sourced, otherwise it could be libellous. That's probably why it's removed. — AnemoneProjectors (talk) 14:38, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Paul Daniels here. Of course I make jokes about ethnic groups, ALL of them from time to time. If I left out the ethnic minority groups, as if they did not exist, wouldn't that be racism? I really do not care which colour you are, or what religious group you belong to, or which country you come from. I only care about whether I LIKE you. I don't like some people so obviously I don't expect everyone to like me. That is the way of life and the way the world turns, BUT just because we don't like different individuals doesn't mean we should be rude or vicious to them. Hey... we all have to survive together. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.148.219.213 (talk) 11:23, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wig[edit]

"Unbeknownst to TV audiences, Daniels sported a wig for the majority of his television career"

This is not really true. Everyone knew he wore a piece. It was not convinceing at all. After he stopped wearing it he has claimed he knew it was bad but that was the point. You were looking at that and not his hands. Djarra 12:06, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect, I'm afraid. If you read the source article, he acknowledges that it was a secret...whether it was a poorly kept secret or otherwise is not the issue.

Apparent pregnancy hoax[edit]

I've removed the following from the article:

"Daniels and McGee recenctly announced that they are expecting a baby girl, to be born in October.[citation needed]"

A fairly exhaustive search of news sources turned up no reference to any pregnancy announcement. In addition, Daniels wrote in his blog on 23 Feb "Don't worry, neither Debbie nor I are pregnant." And there is no reference to preganancy in any more recent entry. Seems that someone was trying to start a hoax here. Circusandmagicfan 11:59, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]

Paul has recently had a grandchild, maybe someone got the wrong end of the stick?Djarra 12:24, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that info. Looks like that clears it up then. Circusandmagicfan 07:21, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]

National category/designation[edit]

Something peculiar has been going on with descriptions relating to nationality in this article. Someone using an anon IP is behaving in a way that is possibly a subtle form of vandalism and/or trolling and possibly also trying to insert a POV (maybe for political reasons?). This person's latest bout of activity began on 15 April when they edited to remove the description of Daniels as a magician from the United Kingdom (which is the description that applied when the article was first created and which has remained uncontested for several years). In it's place was inserted the description "English". The categorisation "British magician" was also removed and replaced by "English magician".

This might seem a minor change but it is not entirely negligible. I contend that, in general, "from the United Kingdom" or "British" are better factual descriptions as they relate to a formal legal nationality and they are less prone to errors. Also, in terms of the Magic World, national magic organisations tend to cover the UK rather than just England and shows such as The Paul Daniels Show were UK-wide broadcasts. (I have posted in more detail about this in a discussion at the WikiProject Magic talk page).

In any case, "United Kingdom" seemed to be a consensus choice for this particular article. I did not at first want to wade in and simply revert the edit. Instead, on 16 April, I restored the "British magician" categorisation. With hindsight I should probably also have reverted the insertion of "English" into the article text.

Because there was a similar pattern of activity on other articles, I posted a detailed explanation of my reasoning at the WikiProject Magic talk page. I should perhaps have flagged that with a post here at the same time and I apologise for that omission. In any case I flagged it in a later edit summary.

Later on 16 April my revert was in turn reverted by another anon IP very similar to the 15 April one. I reverted again on 17 April, with edit summaries indicating what I was doing and pointing to the discussion at the WikiProject Magic talk page. The anonymous user reverted on 18 April (again without an edit summary). I reversed that the same day (with edit summary) but the anon user came in again and re-inserted his POV (without edit summary).

At no time has this anonymous user replied to the points I have made in attempts at discussion at the WikiProject Magic talk page. Instead he or she has confined themself to posting a blunt instruction to me on my talk page followed by a similar blunt assertion at the project talk page. The IP addresses for the anonymous user all begin 172 and all belong to AOL. Interestingly, there was a case of vandalism by a similar AOL address (172.215.211.40) on 27 January, when an abusive name was inserted.

I am temporarily at a loss for what to do. I strongly contest the attempts by this anonymous user to impose his or her POV without even the courtesy of discussion. However I do not want to be part of a classic tit-for-tat edit war. My preferred approach is reasoned argument - which is what I have attempted by posting at WikiProject Magic talk page and now by posting this here. I will hold off from reverting again for the time being while I investigate other ways of resolving this issue. I believe my history of contributions here has been constructive and I seek support from others who have an interest in developing this article positively. Circusandmagicfan 08:26, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]

Daniels has now stated on his own blog that he considers himself British and that he wishes the names England, Scotland etc. had been dropped long ago. I have edited the nationality description and categories here to reflect this. I have cited the relevant page of Daniels' blog in the references. Removal of 'fling' statement[edit]

Earlier today, I removed the following statement:

The Sun Newspaper in the UK reported that Daniels had a fling with a student following a show at Hull University in 2006.

Since the deletion, I have found reference to the Sun newspaper article in question - Source - but I feel my removal is justified. The photographs in the Sun show Paul kissing the girl, and posing for photographs with her as per the inset. You cannot call that a 'fling', and all this took place at the show he did for Hull University. It really isn't worthy of a mention in this context. -TonyW 17:35, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. And there are probably a few other bits of trivia that could go the same way. Circusandmagicfan 22:37, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]

MAG1C numberplate[edit]

Its on his Isuze Trooper. This is shown on the RAC Car Data Check website . Paul himself mentions he owns a Trooper in his own webpage Paul. The interview when it's seen on his Bentley Mulsanne is dated 2006. DavidFarmbrough (talk) 12:07, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Has Paul Daniels sold his MAG1C number plate? It was certainly for sale but can't see any thing to verify it was successfuly sold. Chrissyrussell (talk) 21:16, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

I don't know if this is the right place to flag this I've never posted on wilkipedia before but thought this need to be flaged for someones attention. Just doing a bit of reasearch and I can see that part of the entry has been tampered with, Showbusiness Career para2 has a reference to Mr Daniels having a coke and crack habbit: can I also say that reading over the artical and the discussion page I can't believe what I am seeing, and it makes me wonder as a long time wikipedia user whether I can rely on the information contained here-in,I always thought that the point of this was to give factual unbiased information not peoples points of view whether a performer was good or bad or unfounded rumours culled from the tabloid press,I however see no mention of the show (possibly his last TV magic show) from about 2002 the one where he did the David Cofferfield style big stunt magic trick at the end, it finished with the circular saw or big axe blade cutting through the box he was in apparently early before it was supposed to and then it went to commersial so people didn't know what had happened for several minuets as I remember there was loads of complaints. I think that more than anything finished his TV career though I may be wrong, I am not an expert on magic and have no real intrest in Paul Daniels other than a small part for this piece I am writing on confidence tricksters and referring to Mr Daniels Bunco Booth section of his show as a precurser to shows such as Real Hustle.81.99.1.148 (talk) 23:05, 19 July 2008 (UTC)Captain Scarlet[reply]

The material referred to above was clearly vandalism and I have reverted it. This article does seem particularly prone to frequent vandalism. I (and other editors) try hard to spot this and revert speedily but we can't stop it entirely. I wonder if it's time for this article to protected? Circusandmagicfan (talk) 11:01, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]
I would like to add that if you or anyone else sees anything untoward in the article, don't be afraid to edit it or revert it to an earlier state. Be bold! By us all working together, such nonsense can be dealt with reasonably quickly. -TonyW (talk) 11:54, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not afraid to edit, I'm just tired of reverting a continuing stream of vandalism. Daniels does seem to be a particular target and it seems to have got to the stage where one can pretty much assume the article will be vandalised if left unattended for a few days. I have therefore put in a request for semi-protection . Circusandmagicfan (talk) 19:33, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]
My comments weren't directed to you, but were meant as a suggestion to Captain Scarlet. This is why I didn't inline my paragraph any further as it was a reply to him and not you specifically. Semi-protection may be a good idea as it appears this article gets a fair bit of unwarranted attention by trolls. -TonyW (talk) 22:51, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, scrub that. I see it's been declined. -TonyW (talk) 22:56, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A pity because the vandalism continues - maybe not everyday but enough to make clear that this article is a particular target. What level does the problem have to reach before it meets Wiki's criteria for semi-protection? Circusandmagicfan (talk) 13:51, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Circusandmagicfan[reply]

Guides[edit]

The sections Paul Daniels Magic Show transmission guide and Paul Daniels Secrets Transmission Guide are mostly lists of dates (often not giving TV station). Isn't this a breach of WP:INDISCRIMINATE? Autarch (talk) 23:25, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Two external links removed:

Removal[edit]

I've removed this

Paul Daniels also claimed, a few years ago, to have two Doctorate Degrees. Why is this not mentioned? I understand that at least one of them was an American university "internet" degree that didn't require the same degree of commitment, and with his work commitments, I would question if he had time to do one, let alone two, Ph.D.'s through the normal methods."

from the main article, as it clearly should not be there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 186.212.254.42 (talk) 15:46, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What first attracted you to millionaire Paul Daniels ...?[edit]

I wonder if this issue should be mentioned somewhere in the article, as these days when Daniels is mentioned in public or on internet fora it is often in relation to this comment made by Caroline Aherne in the 1990s on the Mrs Merton show to Debbie McGee. I've never quite understood why this has become such a thing because 1) it's hardly revolutionary for a woman to be attracted to a rich and successful man, since most women prefer not to be with a loser 2) McGee clarified in an interview a few years ago that she was actually richer than him when they met (can't remember the exact quote) 3) Caroline Aherne herself was marrying millionaire New Order bassist at around that time 4) There are much more obvious examples of bigger age gaps and bigger wealth disparities (if there even was a wealth disparity) 5) They are still together after 28 years (which by the way Aherne and her millionaire husband are not). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.166.200.69 (talk) 01:31, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Why the image replacement?[edit]

I think the Ferrari photo is nice but not appropriate as the main photo, for two reasons: 1. A more recent head-and-shoulders shot would better represent Paul, and 2. Paul sold his fancy cars years ago and evolved into someone who doesn't care much for status symbols. He himself has said that. I would use either the original photo or a recent head shot. Even this image (taken about a year ago and already on Wikimedia Commons) would be better; it would just have to be cropped. The Ferrari photo could still be used but lower down on the page. Houdinimuseum (talk) 16:31, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I quite agree, what an awful image. It's barely possible to tell who it is. I've changed it back. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:37, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
