I don't understand[edit]

A Shadow Senator is someone who does not actually hold any political power, but is there purely as a voice of the people. A Shadow Senator does not vote in the Senate but is allowed to state his opinion on the matter. Senator Strauss, and citizens of DC are currently campaigning to get an actual voting position- starting in the House. Check out the article on Shadow Senator that Wikipedia has, it is pretty good.

Who Decides the Status of "Shadow Senator"?[edit]

Who decides that someone is the "Shadow Senator" of the District of Columbia? Such a status implies a failure to comprehend the constitutional structure of our government. The district is reserved for the seat of the government of the United States, and it is intended by the Constitution to give Congress a place to operate without being influenced by state concerns, jealousies, or prejudices. United States Senators are employees of the United States federal government. Shadow Senators are not. Shadow senators perform unpaid work for the government of the District of Columbia. Note that the District of Columbia is not the first non-state to have shadow senators. United States territories have had shadow senators prior to their admission as states. ...Regardless, the talk page of this article is intended to discuss the Wikipedia article, not to debate the concept of shadow senators.
