Proposed move[edit]

I propose to move this article to Pedro Menéndez Márquez, as that is the form of the name that I see in all of the sources I have found. -- Donald Albury 21:42, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't look like anyone who cares is watching this page. I will make the move. -- Donald Albury 18:12, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

People from Parris Island, South Carolina[edit]

I'm really uncomfortable with this category for Pedro Menéndez Márquez. He was associated with the colony of Santa Elena, which was located on what is now called Parris Island, but Santa Elena was abandoned some 80 years before the Province of Carolina was settled. It would be more appropriate to put him a category of People from Santa Elena, La Florida. - Donald Albury 21:51, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree completely. The category as given is "People from Parris Island, South Carolina", not "People from Santa Elena, which eventually became "Parris Island, South Carolina", which would be correct, if far too unwieldy. It's a fallacy to say a person who lived in the 17th century was "from" a place that didn't exist until sometime after 1712. "People from Santa Elena, La Florida" is correct and suitable.
