It certainly was a unique thing at the time for him to acknowledge, but I feel it doesn't deserve undue weight in the lead. Given that the lead is your basic short introduction now, there's no reason to focus on it there. If the lead was expanded to a few paragraphs, then I could see mention.
He had a pretty good pitching career, and his having a condition that more than 20 other million Americans have [1] should not be in the lead. If he busted his knee or had any other common injury, it wouldn't go in the lead, and neither should this.
By the way, your assertion that it "nearly crippled his career" is original research and violates the guidelines on the lead, as the nearly crippling his career is not covered elsewhere in the article. --CutOffTies (talk) 10:12, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
