A few needs (to do)[edit]

We need a bit on religion---the petisi was borne partly out of repressive moves toward Islam. Aspinall is the best scholar that I know of on the topic. I hope to mine his work for some helpful inclusions. And we need to address the incredible rebuke/challenge that this posed to the regime, and how only the prominence of Bang Ali and others shielded them from worse treatment. As it was, innumerable signatories were harassed by the tyrant and his minions. Again, great start. I'm so excited about this page. Thanks Davidelit! There is also the effect on Abdul Haris Nasution, who Suharto never really got on with (perhaps because Nasution was responsible for firing Suharto as commander of the Diponegoro Division in 1959 because of corruption) and who does not seem to have been made an official national hero. Also there needs to be some mention of (Bang) Ali Sadikin, whose appointmen Suharto must have had Suharto's approval given that he was appointed around the time of the Supersemar coup and held onto his job until 1977. Good points. And Sadikin went out of his way to speak out on behalf of Nasution's persecution. Sadikin is really at the core of the whole thing--one of the few people who really had the clout to stand up to Soeharto. Without Bang Ali what would have happened?
