List of chapter names[edit]

Just as a note to editors, please don't add a whole list of chapters in the article. The SHORT list of examples of chapter titles is only there to give people a BRIEF idea of the concept. thanks--EhavEliyahu 11:24, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Done a List of Phi Beta Sigma chapters that is separate from the main article has been created for this purpose --Educatedblkman1914 00:14, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Updates[edit]

Is a list of that many names really justified, given WP:NOT#DIRECTORY? This article really gives the impression of an advertisement rather than an encyclopedia article. --Jasonisme 22:08, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I personally don't think it's terribly necessary; we already have a list of the notable ones elsewhere anyway. I wouldn't quite go so far as to call it an advertisement, though, but I've seen some pretty blatant stuff. As for the actual deletion, I'll leave the final verdict to the next person to comment. Falcon 04:25, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the list of names to its own page and linked it. I will work on improving this article starting this weekend. I will also add sources for the information. I think I still have some information from when I was involved in the organization.--EhavEliyahu 20:49, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seven University of South Carolina students have been arrested for a hazing incident that took place off-campus. Detectives say that during the initiation meeting, some of the fraternity members charged in the incident strangled the student with a T-shirt and hit him multiple times on his body with a wooden paddle, belt and steel bat. Deputies say some of the fraternity members charged in the incident also hit the victim more than 100 times on his body with closed fists and open hands. Deputies say the victim told them that when he arrived at the apartment, fraternity members blindfolded him and assaulted him. During the assaults, the victim reported that he nearly lost consciousness.

Rushing Black Fraternities[edit]

If possible, please clean up this section: Fraternities_and_sororities#Joining_a_black_fraternity_or_sorority. It reads poorly and its citations should be footnotes instead. I am also unsure of the universality of said processes; if they are fairly common, keep them; if not, delete them. Thank you for your help. —ScouterSig 16:45, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not done that section no longer exists in that article-- Educatedblkman  1914 (user)(talk) 04:28, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Biography sections[edit]

I think the article would be greatly improved if the long biography sections on the 3 foundes and the 3 other members were removed. I think it would be best to create separate articles for these men and just provide limited text within the article with their PBS contributionand a wikilink to the person's new wikipedia article.--Ccson 16:22, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I took your recommendation and moved the current information under the founders into their own pages. I left their pictures there with links to the new pages Occasio 20:32, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You should do the same for the section "Diversity in membership'. I think it's okay for now to include one paragraph and picture for each person and then direct them to that person main artile for all the good details. The same for the 3 founder is you want to add some text, I just thought the entire bio was overwhelming for the general fraternity. I'll review and provide other suggestions.--Ccson 05:40, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect Page[edit]

I have redirected the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc page to this page. Occasio 13:59, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Table of Presidents Location[edit]

Where would be the best place to put the table of Presidents? Occasio 21:28, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the current locations is okay for now, but as the article progresses, you may find a different location more suitable. I would suggest you remove the title "Honorable" from each naame, since they all seem to be honorable. May include some text before the table describing the role of the President and that they obtain the title "honorable" once elected.--Ccson 05:45, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Three Presidents for Speedy Deletion as well as images[edit]

I have requested speedy attention for all three founder's pages, since they are in violation of copyright. They are exact copies of http://www.pbs1914.org/history/morse.asp, http://www.pbs1914.org/History/brown.asp, and http://www.pbs1914.org/History/morse.asp. Also, I am going to submit some of the pictures which are on this page to WP:MFD, because they are part of the website, which is copyrighted. Real96 06:07, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have decided to withdraw the image request, since it is under GFDL. Real96 06:11, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Are you saying that the images of the three founders may be utilized because they are under GFDL?Educatedblkman1914 23:39, 15 August 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Educatedblkman1914 (talkcontribs)

History of Stepping[edit]

removed per Wikipedia:Copyrights. Page is verbatim copy of Phi Beta Sigma page here, originally with spelling errors. NPOV rewrite of info with sources to the book copied would be sufficient fix.-Robotam 20:29, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure how this works on Wikipedia, but the article on stepping was originally written by me in the 1990's. After I left the fraternity it was taken by several chapters in the fraternity on posted on their web-sites. Since the originally site where I wrote the artile is no longer up the link for the page was the closest I could come. I only recently copy wrote the article as a part of a book I have written, I didn't initially copywrite it when I wrote it in the 1990's. Once again I am not sure how something like this works out.--EhavEliyahu 12:11, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

EhavEliyahu, i'm by no means the expert, but, depending on how you published it, it may or may not run afoul of Wikipedia:No original research. generally, you are also going to run into trouble if you insert it into the article in a non-neutral point of view. from experience, i would say your best bet would be to cite to the original sources you used, and stay clear of anything that sounds like opinion, argument, or what wiki calls "weasel words" (ie-"others say," "some say"). "stepping to the blues" is a good source to cite, as well. Hope that helps.-Robotam 14:30, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info. I have actually sent an email to Phi Beta Sigma members who are still active to work on the article. I just wanted to get it started so that someone else could work on it.--EhavEliyahu 14:44, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
copasetic. best of luck.-Robotam 15:32, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Table of Presidents[edit]

The word "honorable" should be taken out from the table, since not everyone on wikipedia is a member of Phi Beta Sigma. Also, numbers should be taken out of the table as well. Real96 00:02, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Corrected this. Real96 07:10, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done, The table of presidents has been transformed into a template and placed under the membership section of the article-- Educatedblkman  1914 (user)(talk) 04:33, 17 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment[edit]

Right now, I still think this article is a start class, because 1.) Most of the text looks like it is copied from another source. 2.) The lines of various chapters don't need to be included because it's redundant and can be included in Fraternities and sororities 3.) Famous members' biographies should not be included on the page. Instead membership as a whole (i.e. numbers and profession) should be included. Remember, this article is not a handout for the organization! If you want ideas to see what type of content the article should encompass, look at Alpha Phi Alpha for FA and Alpha Kappa Alpha for B/possibly GA. Miranda 13:25, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Took out "lines," "videos," and "famous members," because the information is not necessary with the article. Miranda 01:34, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings Miranda. I agree with your assessments. I actually did some of the updates to the article with the hope that someone who is still active in the Fraternity would continue to work on it and improve it. Initially, the fraternity line information wasn't meant to be a comprehensive list. It was meant to be a section that discussed the culture of Phi Beta Sigma, but eventually people kept adding chapters instead of working on the content of that section, so I agree with its deletion. The other information was meant only to be a start since the members who were listed were instrumental in molding the fraternity structure. Same issue there it was meant to be taken on by members who could write the information in a way that connected the entire article.--EhavEliyahu 13:14, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done I think that a reassessment is due for this article seeing as the previous issues regarding the content have been resolved and the article has received extensive expansion Educatedblkman1914 21:43, 21 August 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Educatedblkman1914 (talkcontribs)

Black Power Movement[edit]

In the section on the Civil Rights movement, the mention of the Panthers is followed directly by a reference to the Black Power Movement, implying that these are one and the same. I think that's a serious error in logic and history. The Panthers were part of the movement; they were not the entire movement. An outbound link to the movement itself would be helpful for comprehension.66.92.161.127 (talk) 16:09, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done The most recent edit to that paragraph should clear up any misconceptions and misrepresentations --Educatedblkman1914 03:06, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

File:PBSMillionManMarch1995.jpg Nominated for speedy Deletion[edit]

An image used in this article, File:PBSMillionManMarch1995.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion for the following reason: Wikipedia files with no non-free use rationale as of 17 November 2011

What should I do?

Don't panic; you should have time to contest the deletion (although please review deletion guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to provide a fair use rationale
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale, then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Deletion Review
