According to Livy and others, fearing that Enna would side with the Carthaginians and evict the garrison, Pinarius prepared for a massacre, inviting the people of Enna to assemble in the theater. He assigned his soldiers to blockade any escape routes and to wait for his signal, upon which the Roman soldiers rushed into the assembly and massacred the whole population. Livy appears disapproving of this murderous action, although he questions whether the act was "heinous, or necessary." If the intention was to deter other cities by fear, however, it did not succeed as "this unspeakable butchery" led those who had been vacillating to go over to the Carthaginians.
