Pt Lonsdale, the bomb shelters and ex World War II gun turrets

In the top end, also known as the "old" end of Pt Lonsdale, up near the lighthouse there are a series of old bomb shelters and armaments. These were used in WWII just in case an enemy ship, or submarine was to try and invade. At the pier in Pt Lonsdale, near the lighthouse, there is a very small concrete cell reinforced with steel bars. It used to house a laser, which went all the way across the water, into another cell. This was used, so if a ship tried to come through, it would break the laser and alert the gun turrets, on the other side of the pier, up along the sand dunes. If you go for a walk up along the path at the lighthouse, there are a series of bomb shelters which are allowed to be accessed freely. The first concrete shelter you will see (on the path) is one which is near the steps that go down to the beach. It has a small round area which used to hold a small artillery cannon. The next one along you are allowed to go to. This is a smaller one with two parts. The first part is sort of underground and has a concrete pillar in the center of the room, which held a small machine gun, if you look you will see three small holes in it. They would have held the guns tripod. the third shelter/ armament held a large cannon on a rotating platform, it also has a bomb shelter and steps which seem to go no-where. The fourth shelter is similar to the one before except the bomb shelter is on the opposite side, and it has a pair of small rails which go down also seemingly to nowhere. if you look carefully you will notice that their stairs all point inwards to a small valley. Down from the lighthouse there is a big brick building whose windows and doorways are boarded up by green ply wood, these buildings were part of the TOK-H system, which was like a detention centre ,for people from the country's like Italy and Germany to make sure they were not spies.

Much is arrant nonsense; I doubt whether any is worth using. Maias (talk) 23:22, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
