And is it celebrated by all but predominantly by Dravidians, or what?

I removed the phrase "Aryans a.k.a. Hindus", because the "Aryan race" in India, while predominantly Hindu, also has Buddhists, Jains and other denominations in it. --ashwatha 08:02, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Kaanum pongal

I am not sure the follwing text in the article about kaanum pongal is correct

... youths used to gather at river banks to view and select their future life partners, but that practice has declined.

A few external websites refer to a brother-sister ritual on this day, but none about choosing lifepartners or anything like that. Therefore, I remove the sentence. If this is indeed a fact, please add it back with proper references. ~ srini 05:59, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Pongal is also a food

As fas as I know, Pongal is also the name of a food item in Andhra Pradesh made from rice and pulses. Probably this should be mentioned in the article. 130.203.202.7 21:26, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

This article is currently tagged for needing more references, and according to the rules at Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries, must be omitted from the Main Page on January 15, 2012, unless the issue can be addressed. What does Thai mean in Tamil perspective?

Thai is January in Tamil The name is Thai Pongal however there are some Tamils in Thailand, and the name of the month Thai is confusing because the word Thai is referred to the people and the language of Thailand 99.229.41.79 (talk) 01:51, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

-The word "Thai" refers to the month of the Tamil calendar (Actually Thamizh calendar). October 2019: full protection to stop edit warring

People seriously need to stop edit warring and try to work out their disagreements on this talkpage. I have full-protected the page (so that only admins can edit it) for a week. Title

Others / @Utcursch: Should this just be titled Pongal? I have gone through well over 25 sources. Pongal is the common name for this festival, in official and old/recent scholarly publications. I agree - Pongal seems to be more common name. Maybe this was created to avoid confusion with Pongal (dish). utcursch | talk 21:07, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

That would be my guess too. Not a good reason to keep the status quo though. The "(dish)" suffices to distinguish the other article to the reader. Let us wait for a few days and see if there are any other constructive comments/reasons forthcoming. If not, we need to overwrite the pre-existing redirects. @Ms Sarah Welch: The article's title should be reverted back to Thai Pongal as it's the most common name. Google provides 314,000 hits, including reliable news sources and books. Tai Pongal on the other hand returns fewer than 8,000 hits.--Obi2canibe (talk) 17:20, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

Pongal has 11,400,000 hits on Google. On google scholar, and Ngram too, the hits for Pongal far outnumber than those for "Thai Pongal" or "Tai Pongal". Further support for Utcursch's comment above. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 17:32, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

@Ms Sarah Welch: This is classic whitesplaining. As a Tamil I can tell you it's Thai Pongal. Earlier on you were confident that Tai Pongal was the correct name. Now it's Pongal. Obi2canibe: when you write "earlier on you were...", you are reading and projecting too much in my reply. I did consider that the 11,400,000 hits may include other uses of pongal, tried Advanced Search (pongal AND festival, etc, both on google and academic paywalled ones). Still 30x higher. Tried searching for pongal, explicitly including the word "festival", and explicitly excluding the word "thai". Still many millions of results. I also tried the usage in Tamil Nadu and Indian government sources. These too predominantly use the term "pongal", and variants are relatively rare/fringe and recent. We can't rely on anyone alleging/pretending/rightfully claiming to be a Tamil, as wikipedia is not a personal blog (nor a place to offensively and forum-y argue "classic whitesplaining" as you put it). We must stick to what the mainstream, vast majority of scholarly secondary and tertiary reliable sources are stating, not the personal wisdom / prejudice / opinion. Help on fixing infobox

Hi. I added the 2021 date for Pongal, and I deleted the source for the 2020 date. It then deleted the infobox. Can someone please help me fix it?
