Needs Explanation[edit]

"large-heart-producer"- what is this supposed to mean? It's not part of that x-factor nonsense is it? It's certainly not referenced, hence the templateTigerboy1966 (talk) 23:32, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is a genetic certainty that some Thoroughbreds possess and pass the large heart gene on to their progeny. As mares are XX, they may pass the trait to sons or daughters, but stallions can only pass the trait via their sole X to daughters. It does not occupy the Y chromosome, and as such may not be passed father to son. For example, Princequillo is suspected to have had the large heart gene as either he, or Imperatrice, Somethingroyal's mother, or both would have to have passed the large gene to her for her to have passed it to Secretariat, since Bold Ruler could not have contributed that gene to his genetic makeup. Secretariat and Sham both had extraordinarily healthy, extremely large hearts as proven when they were autopsied, and both had Princequillo as a damsire. Do you object to the inclusion of this principle of Thoroughbred breeding in the article, or to the wording? Cobaltcanarycherry (talk) 06:10, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well spoken Cobaltcanarycherry. I have "learn't" something with your words. The large heart gene is passed on my not the Sire to Son but Sire to Daughter to her Son or her Daughter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.155.10.132 (talk) 22:27, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
