This article is mostly one unclean list. The content should be moved to tables instead of sumchapters. I found it unfair to call quakeCon exceptional as a LAN party for it's voluntary work. Most LAN parties of any scale depends of voluntary work. Examples:The Gathering (computer party), Assembly (demo party) and Dreamhack. So I edited that part out.

Then for the naming. Is the name quakecon, QuakeCon, quakeCon or Quakecon? May variations are used.

I added the {{cleanup-tone}} tag, because the article reads too much like a Quakecon ad instead of an encyclopaedic work. Especially the community section contains too much unverifyable hyperbole. --Plek 12:14, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

In the process[edit]

I'm in the process of putting this article into more of an encylopedia entry as opposed to, as the previous person has said, a giant Quakecon advertisement. First minor edit of the night: I don't really think it's necessary to emphasize that the event is free.

actually, I'd say that it's one of the single most important things to emphasize. Quakecon is basically the largest 100% free LAN party in the entire world. That's a big deal :) --TomServo

I don't think qconpics should be an external link[edit]

I don't think this should be in the external links, as the site only has a 2004 gallery. I think the links to gallery pages should be as comprehensive as possible. --Mancide

More factual history and commentary[edit]

I'd have to echo the earlier comments. This isn't the place for promotion, and the event deserves a frank historical discussion, encompassing both its many successes, and its warts as well. The event is dear to many of us, and its history should not be written as an advertisement, nor edited to soften details. It would be well to consider, that this might be the only enduring history of the event in a few years.

It would be nice to locate a listing of the tournament winners, and the amounts that they won. A few more paras on the origins of the event would be great too, since they represent the "lore" of the event - an important thing to the community of folks the event has spawned over the years. --Tapper

2006 is not the past[edit]

I removed the 2006 subsection from "Past Events" since

  1. It hasn't happened, so it's not a past event
  2. There was useful information here not already in the QuakeCon 2006 section

Popular Games[edit]

I think that it does because it lists the games that are currently played at Quakecon. I do, however, think that the title is not specific enough, I think Popular Games Played at Quakecon would be more appropriate, though it's a bit long. I also think that games such as Doom 3 should be removed because it is not longer a popular game. --Credema 06:10, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]


Perhaps new games could be added with the year they really came out into their own? (Guitar Hero, DDR, et al) It might help to show folks that you aren't confined to id's games when you're at QuakeCon, and yes, I did notice CoD, CS, and BF2. While yes, id Software games and games based on their engines are the primary focus, it could be helpful to let it be known that they aren't the only focus.

I don't think that really goes along with the definition of 'what is QuakeCon' because the case mod competition (or case modding in general) is not one of the primary foci of the event.

Clarification...[edit]

Has Apple Computer actually been a sponsor? I was under the impression that they haven't been. I know Aspyr has been, but I wasn't sure about Apple. I welcome elucidation.

Modified 2000 & 2001[edit]

I passed leadership of QuakeCon to EvilJohn/Tapper for the 2001 event, not 2000. Updated those two years to reflect that fact. Also, I have a bunch of saved emails/docs/etc that might be nice for this site. Tom, let me know what you'd like to see here. Ccwino 14:36, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

QuakeCon 2007[edit]

We also need to mention that Superpumper replaces Eagle1 as Director of Registration and
that T-Dawg replaces Nate as Director of Tournaments. Someone with more eloquence should

suggested mod: quakecon personality honorable mentions / obituaries?[edit]

today when i heard that polish had passed on (jaroslaw wolski, aka 'jerry'), i wanted to make mention of him on the quakecon page here at wikipedia as being one of the key first people to be heavily involved with quakecon during the first few events, which was greatly appreciated.

would it be considered as being outside of the scope of the wikipedia article to make mention of quakecon personalities, and their passing? i'd like to hear some opinions before i go (or someone else goes) to make any edits to the actual article.

polish counts in my mind as one of the major influences in the creation of quakecon, and i'm finding it unfortunate he had not yet made it into the wikipedia article while he was still alive. in the past i've had thoughts about making mention of other people, like stigmata (mike leary), as being "quakecon personalities" of note, who are either still with us or who have left us.

thoughts, anyone? ;-)
